So I set out yesterday to do a full detail on my GTI. I have alot of faint swirl marks and hazing that I wanted to get rid of. So I broke out my new PC DA, some lake country pads and the Meguairs 105/205

Knowing that the VW paint is really hard, I started with a Cyan hydro pad ( cutting power one notch above the orange pads) and the Megs 105. I went over and over the same spot and robbed off the compound only to find that I had alot of hazing and not much else. So I went to the 205 on an orange pad. No improvement. Then went to a white pad with the 205. Still nothing.
Finally I gave up and just did the whole car with an orange pad and the 205 really just to clean the paint and get a fresh surface to work on.
Applied Meguairs Polymer sealant 2.0 and topped that with P21S 100% Carnauba.
It does look good right now for the most part. But if you look at it in direct sun at the right angle you can still see all of the imperfections :(

    1. Post a sun shot of your paint

    2. What technique are you using to work in 105 with the Cyan pad? Should be speed 6, small (2x2' max) section, SLOW arm movements (1-2 inches per second, overlapping each pass), with a total of ~6 passes covering the entire section using quite a bit of pressure. All of these things will make a difference. Another thing is, the HT pads need to be CLEAN and DRY to work effectively.

The pads were totally new. But honestly I had never done this before so I don't think I had any technique. I started with one small area and I think I was using speed 3 on the buffer. Judging by what you said I was going way too fast back and forth. I think another problem was that some of the time my car was in the sun. I dont have a garage. I tried to park the car up as close to my house as I could but some of it was in the sun :(

it's overcast now but it's clearing up. I'll try and get some pics later on.

The one section that has the most marks wasn't in the sun yet.

But it's actually not that bad.

    Best pic to show swirls
*note that this is AFTER the sealant and wax. So they have filled in some of the swirls a little.

Overall it actually came out pretty good.

Compounding has to be done on speed 6, with a lot of pressure and slow passes. Honestly, when I do VWs or Audis I don't even bother with a DA and go right after it with a rotary. You can remove most of the swirls with a DA, just takes too long.

I'm afraid of burning up my paint and adding swirls with a rotary :o I would need to practice on some old junker or something.

You can do the job with your PC, but it'll take a while -- or at least longer than most cars. Just work slow and at speed 6. You won't burn up your paint with that.

#105 + #205 + 3M Ultrafine and keeping the pad flat is pretty goof proof. Definitely should practice first.

some dirty cock sucker egged my car last night.
Thankfully the polymer sealant kept the paint safe from the glop, but they threw the egg so hard that it looks like it damaged the paint. It is a ciruclar pattern with white speckled marks where the egg hit. It feels like it acually chipped the paint. MOTHER FUCKER

Egg shells cut into the paint, that's where the damage comes from.

It's just the tragic effects of eggs on paint.
