I don't get how DVD upscaling works

    To me the whole concept sounds like taking a really shitty quality jpg and making it a higher resolution which doesn't help with the quality :dunno:

    anyone care to elaborate?

    Imagine a black and a white pixel next to each other.

    If you zoom in you'll just see a larger black pixel next to a larger white pixel and it will be choppy.

    But you can "average" the black and white and know that there should be gray where they meet.

    There's a lot more to it than that and there are different methods but that kind of gives you an idea. Instead of just zooming in and making the pixels bigger the software kind of guesses what would be between those pixels if the resolution was higher.
