Working with some of my designers is so tiresome. One of them just approached me about styling a scroll bar, I told them no, then was told that I do not care about design and that I'll only like a website if it's usable and functional, even if the design looks like shit.

    :hs:

Same designer also told me last week than our client is going to get a "shitty landing page" because she wanted a landing page without copy, just images. :ugh2:

Tell them www.drudgereport.com is an example of timeless design, and that all the trendy designs they're shooting for aren't the best for a client's ROI. Albeit, no client has the clarity to understand why designs like that are so good.

wtf, that design sucks. design isn't everything, but im sure drudgereport would get more visitors if its design weren't so shitty.

Functionality and design go hand in hand, if it functions like crap you wont want to use it, if it looks like crap, you wont want to use it, but at least you will be able to.

You guys are nuts. Obviously there must be a balance between design and functionality. But it seems as most designers (At least the ones I've worked with) don't understand the importance of functionality or usability on the web and would push design elements that would sacrifice the cost of functionality. From my experience, the most pleasurable designers to work with are ones that have actually written their own website and have an understanding of markup and methodologies.

I have to agree their must be a balance. A site with a poor design usually turns me off and has me clicking elsewhere. A site with poor functionality, or basic problems also turns me off greatly.

I haven't seen drudge report before and at first glance its a little confusing to figure out what the hell is going on...its design is based upon the content and ads

Your designers are asses. Design should be created around the usability and function of the site. It doesn't matter how good it looks, if somebody can't use it, it's a piss poor site.

And I agree. A designer should know how to break their design out into markup and understand the proper ways of doing so. There are too many twiddle dicks out there with photoshop and no real knowledge. It's sickening.

I consider myself a designer.
