I've been reading about it and the physiology of it all got me really curious. I decided to try it out for a couple weeks just to see how my body reacts to it since I've never done any kind of carb-limiting diet. The main thing I'm curious about is carbohydrate consumption. Lyle says in his booklet (Guide to Rapid Fat Loss) that it's okay to eat as many veggies as you want (aside from carrots, peas, and corn.) Is this just because of a lot of the carbohydrates in green, leafy vegies are indigestible fiber? And since he made no mention of it, are potatoes okay? (are they fibrous vs. starchy?) What about yams/sweet potatoes? Exactly how many carbohydrates should I limit myself to?

My second concern is sodium intake. Lyle says it's actually a good idea to supplement sodium intake to help restore electrolytes and such. This is strange to me since most diets limit sodium intake... So how much sodium is too much?

Any other information you feel like sharing, please do. :wavey:

That said, my first day on the PSMF wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I woke up and ate about 6 egg whites with salt and pepper. A couple hours later I had a protein shake and a couple pieces of brocolli to hold me over until lunch. For lunch I had a chicken breast chopped up into a salad with light balsamic vinegarette dressing. I put in some onions, too. Couple hours later I had another protein shake. Mid-day snack was a couple of baby carrots, more broccoli, (shit is hard to eat w/o any dressing) and 2 cups of chicken broth. For dinner I had some beef jerky, a small piece of chicken with an insignificant amount of soy sauce cooked into it, and a protein shake.

Throughout the day I drank maybe ~5 bottles of ice-cold water, had two doses of EC, two lean green pills, 6g of fish oil, and my multivitamin. Some years back I attempted the atkins but I broke down in the first couple of days because I was so shaky. I feel fine right now after a full day of hardly any starchy carbs. I'm not sure on my total calorie count but it can't be much more than maybe 600-800 calories and surprisingly I haven't felt hungry all day.

I'm going to be lifting tomorrow morning to deplete any glycogen stores I have left in my muscles to speed up the process of going into ketosis.

I guess another question: Can I still go into ketosis while eating salads, broccoli, etc?

No potatoes, no yams, no carrots, no corn. Basically only eat it if it's green. Too much sodium is not a concern, your body just excretes the excess.

:coold: The all-knowing Ceaze. Seriously dude, what do you have your degree in?

So assuming green veggies don't count, how many grams of carbs should I be eating a day to maintain ketosis?

Dude you're overthinking. It doesn't matter if you're in ketosis or not, all that matters is the caloric deficit. You shouldn't need to count your carbs because if all you're eating is green fibrous vegetables the amount of carbs you'll be consuming will mean fuck all anyhow.

True. So does it really matter how many carbs I'm eating as long as my calories are ridicuously low and I keep my protein intake up?

"That is what a PSMF is, 1.5 g/kg lean body mass of protein, some veggies, vit/min supplements and NOTHING ELSE. No fat, no carbs (or as minimal as you can make them)." -Lyle

His version adds in 6g of fish oil for fats, though. :hs:

Yeah. He probably added that in a later post. Basically it's just lean protein (and whatever tag along fat/carbs come with, which should be kept low), fish oil and veggies. That's it. That's all. It's controlled starvation.

I'm planning to start an 11day cycle of that diet when my routine calls for the volume to drop (in 2 weeks). The only problem is I'm lifting crap all day long and no carbs will kill me.

    1. Would creatine be good to take to help with the lifting (3g every 2 hours)?
    2. He mentioned sugar pills (5g pre, 15g during) workouts, would 20g of gatorade powder have the same effect?

    1. Probably won't make much difference
    2. Yeah, gatorade powder is basically just dextrose and flavoring

Honestly I've never had any problems dropping 1-2lbs a week with just dieting and my regular lifting routine with reduced volume. I'm just curious about this. :dunno: Like I said, it'll probably only be a couple of weeks. I'm doing it more out of curiosity than need.

Each week you get a "free meal" where you're allowed to eat whatever within one meal (moderately) and one day of refeeding. I'm guessing on free meal day I won't go too nuts. I'll just allow myself BBQ sauce with my chicken and ceasar dressing with my salad and some chocolates for "dessert" since I got a fancy box of chocolates for easter. :hs:
