Like a tard I downloaded a file I thought was coming from a friend of mine. Im a wow nerd and it was supposed to be a guild recruitment vid. Anyways it turned out to be a keylogger and I cant get the fucking thing to go away.

Tried spy bot, clean up, ad-aware, mal ware bytes, microsoft threat assesment and none of them are finding this fucking thing.

EDIT: Booted into safe mode and even ran them and still nothing.

My wow account has been taken over and I have just finished closing all my bank accounts that I accessed today.

Can any of you more computer savy people help me kill this fucking thing so I dont have to format my hard drive?

DO NOT GO TO THIS LINK UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING !!!

    wow588.com/video.exe

Why would a video be a .exe file?

    I'll do some research.

Using that Threat Expert report, I would suggest doing this:

Boot your computer up in safe mode. Locate the files that it says were created and edited on your machine. With a backup of your folder created, begin deleting this files, including .dll's. Make sure that they are not needed for anything else: they shouldn't be.

    Go Start->Run->regedit

Locate the registries that were changed on your machine on the tree on the left hand side. After creating a backup of your registry, delete these files. Make sure you delete everything in reference to them: You will just have to delete the folder that the registry is in. Use the key ID's that are given as ways to find them.

Once this is all done. Run your virus scans again to see if anything catches something. Once clean, restart in normal mode, and make sure that none of your changes have screwed with your system. If it did, restart back in safe mode and replace what you've done.

This should fix what you have: I would also report this to Blizzard so that they can return your account to you. However, I would assume all of your items and gold are long gone by now.

    If it's keylogged, format.

formatting removes EVERYTHING from the computer. even windows. nothing will be left.

and you didn't need to close all of your bank accounts.. you just needed to change the passwords on a non-infected computer.

it's unlikely this person would go after your banking information, anyway, since that stuff is easily traceable and then he'd be committing a federal crime. I'm sure they just wanted your WOW accounts.

Do you want to risk having DLLs lingering on your computer, where the accounts could just be taken again if you don't know it?

    FORMAT

where the fuck are you getting your information?

wow forums tech support / customer service

Im asking everyone and seeing what happens.

I really cant format right now. I dont have a copy of windows to put back on the laptop if i wiped it out. Otherwise I would have done it. Plus I am poor so I cant go buy windows and the local computer shop wants 110 dollars to reinstall windows...

If I were you I would format. It would bother me not knowing 100% that I got everything cleaned off. Any other virus you clean it up and your good to go but the fact that all your passwords, account numbers, etc could all still be logged would worry me. Windows xp is like ~$80 from newegg, or if you call your computer manufacturer a lot of times you can get a reinstall disk for a couple bucks.

like everyone else, I 100% agree......format, format, format

non computer savvy people always freak when they hear the word "format", it's really not that big of a deal. Get you a big ass USB drive, spend a few hours finding/backing up your files.

If you insist on not formatting, I'd download a program called "hijackthis" and post the log on a forum like this. You'll have to find someone that really knows their shit to look at it and walk you through step by step how to clean everything. But it's a huge fucking pita

What model laptop? There's probably a tool built in to do all of that for you. Just did this myself last night --> http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=4186901

whenever you see someone on the internet say "I bought XXX software" that translates to "I downloaded a torrent of XXX software". Especially coming from an OT'er :mamoru:

 What the hell have you been reading that's telling you formatting won't fix it?

    Don't go back there. :squint:

Anyway, take the computer to your college's IT center. They should be able to reinstall windows for you, as long as you have a license key sticker on the machine.

seriously. I know it takes me like 4 hours max to backup my files and format, any problem whatsoever that takes anywhere close to that long and the machine gets formatted. I love formatting my machines.....everything runs so much faster when you're done, it's basically like getting a brand new computer :coolugh:

TwistedMind - did you read that link I posted? Seeing as how it's hp.com I'd say that's a pretty reliable source

about 1/3 of the way down the page
It also explains how you can create recovery DVD's (from the hidden partition that comes on your laptop from the factory). If you do that, all you have to do is boot from the DVD and it'll walk you through the Windows install and take care of all your drivers and software for you (which is otherwise a pita)

Just call it a day and format.

Go grab Acronis True Image and a big USB hard drive. It only takes an hour for me to back up all my files that way.

Then wipe the hard drive and install XP/Vista/7/whatever.

I took ya'lls advice and formated yesterday. it took alot longer than 4 hours but thats probably because the laptop isnt worth the cost of windows at this point. Anyways thanks for the prompt attention guys I ppreciate it.

I had no idea I could burn restore cd's from my old hard drive. saved me at least 105 bucks. good job.
