I currently have the 17-55 F2.8 IS USM Canon lens and I have been thinking about selling it to buy a 24-105 F4 IS USM lens.

    1)Is this a bad choice?
2)I would like to have the extra reach but am I giving up too much going from F2.8 to F4?
    3)would I really miss the 17-24mm range?

I really like how the L lenses internally zoom also. I also have the 70-200L F4 IS USM lens and the 50 f1.8. I am more concerned I think with the loss of a stop that the focal range. My shooting is primarily my family and the things we do. I have never done any work for anyome else (and I have had my gear for several years past the obligatory 1 year!)

are you on a crop camera or a full frame? if you are on a crop camera, you will miss the 17-24mm range. i spent 6 months with my widest lens as a 28mm and i will never do that again. :o

Not all the L lenses internally zoom. I know the 24-70L extends on the wide end and retracts on the long end (or maybe the other way around).

Not sure about the 24-105 but you should check before buying if that is a major factor in your purchase.

with a 40d, unless you are planning on getting an uwa (10-22, 11-16, etc) then i wouldn't switch from a 17-55 to a 24-105. i would try renting the 24-105 and see if you really like it enough to replace the 17-55. if you have a 70-200, then really you are losing 17-24mm to gain 55-70mm which isn't a trade off i would want to make.

I think I might miss the wide end a bit. and my lens is a really great lens. I think it has jut been so long since I got new photo gear, that I am looking to get something new more than anything.

And I am actually living in Catasauqua. but Allentown is more familiar.

The 24-105 extends almost 2 inches when zooming out to 105mm.

what do you mean by too tight inside?

24mm on a crop is too tight. you can't back up far enough half the time to get people or more than just a single portrait.

def a matter of opinion. i can "kinda" make my 35 1.8 work inside, but if i need wider than 2 people shoulder to shoulder i keep running in to walls.

the tammy 17-50 is perfect. i love being able to back up to 17mm

the tokina 11-16 is better :noes: a few shots i got in europe, inside a tight "european sized room" i needed the tokina at 11mm 2.8 to get it.

I have a sigma 10-20 and would be lost without it.

    i would go with the 24-70mm f2.8

if you need wide then get the 16-35mm f2.8, the 16mm on the full frame is really nice

the 25-105mm, you're basically stuck mid range without a low f-stop

I primarily shoot with a 24-105L, it's an awesome lens. but I take alot of low-light/indoor shots and have been wanting to get the 24-70L for the 2.8

on Canon Rumors, since Canon's lens site went down last week, there have been speculation on a 20-70L IS remake for this year :x:

there is already some new IS L glass coming this way

If you plan on shooting the 24-105 indoors often, that f4 aperture is going to make focusing a bit more problematic.

My understanding is that the optics of the 17-55 are slightly better than the 24-105. . . Plus you'll probably miss the 17-24 range.

If you really want longer and don't need 2.8, try the 70-200 f4. . . it's a great value. The 55-70mm range is kinda meh.
