But didn't go infantry and even then probably wouldn't be good enough.

So instead, I got myself a copy of the BN scout sniper TM, Remington 700, and a range finder. Now I just need to find a large open field where I won't be caught as a terrorist. :o

I'd like to be a sniper also, but I think I would be good enough to go into combat as I am. I wouldn't want to go through all the bullshit to become one though.

i met plenty of snipers even in djibouti. there's plenty of snipers in iraq considering how much the insurgents use sniping teams. what's worse is that they would ambush our snipers and steal their weapons, uniforms, IDs, and equipment.

you lay there... its not like 'shooter' man, your job is to scout... Regular infantry carries modified m14's and m24's to BP positions which is fun. But honestly when everyone is shooting auto weapons you're not going to grab a bolt action rifle and join in... m4 carbine ftw.

But it is nice having one or two out there in hides overwatching when you are out on patrols...if they don't get compromised which happens alot in Baghdad.

Both of my roommates are scout snipers, becoming a sniper is fucking tough and just having the physical and mental requisites is only half the battle, it's so political. Our STA Plt has ~40 Marines in it, with only 15 who are 8541's and have been to school. They only get 2-3 school slots a year for 40+ Marines and we're in the middle of a MEU workup right now and STA only got an additional 2 seats. The way it works for STA Plt in my unit is if you can even make it into the plt (the indoc is fucking insane) you'll just be a saw gunner on your first deployment and if you do well you'll be a shooter on your next, and by then you've got 2-3 years in STA Plt and are eligible to compete for one of the 3 or so school seats a year. There are Sgt's who have been in STA for 4 years and haven't even been to school yet. It's not like recon where you just go straight to BRC, it's a much more long drawn out process and you have to prove yourself over the course of years, not months.

I'm not going to lie, I wanted to be a scout sniper just like every other swinging dick in the Marine Corps, that is until I saw them going out for 15 mile pack runs in flak and kevlar 5 days a week to the main gate and back at 0300... fuck that shit. You pretty much have to be an ironman triathlete just to make it into STA.
