Hyundai to Bring Luxury Sedan to U.S.

    By JOHN KELL

Hyundai Motor Co. confirmed it will launch its flagship luxury sedan in the U.S. market next year, continuing the company's move upmarket after the successful launches two other luxury models under the name Genesis.

"We showed the car at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, and the response was fantastic," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and chief executive. "Since then, we've had a fleet traveling around the country, capturing input from our dealers and consumers."

The Korean auto maker, long known for its inexpensive cars, also cited the strong sales of the Genesis sedan and Genesis Coupe, which are already in previously uncharted waters for Hyundai. The Genesis line tallied 11,953 sales in the U.S. through July this year, making it the fifth most popular carline Hyundai offers in the U.S.

The new flagship is expected to be similar to the Equus, which sells in the Korean market for $75,000. The vehicle's name, pricing, packaging and other specifications haven't been finalized, but is expected to launch in the U.S. beginning in late 2010.

A spokesman for Hyundai said the new sedan's closest competitor will likely be Toyota Motor Co.'s Lexus LS460, which starts at about $63,825. The new sedan isn't expected to be priced as high as Korea's Equus or the LS460, according to the spokesman.

You shouldn't name cars after plays about a boy who loves horses sexually.

That's the problem. Hyundai is trying to become the upmarket brand. They created Kia to pick up the downmarket slack, but it hasn't really worked as well as they'd like.

Yes, that's what they're doing. Creating another brand is a huge investment and a stupid one in a shrinking new car market (or even a healthy new car market, ask Toyota about Scion).

That's because nobody actually buys them. Sales hover around 1,000 per month, no breakdown between coupe and sedan models either from Hyundai.

Hyundai did it backwards, when you think about it. That's why it's not working.

You have the basic brand, then you make an upmarket one. You don't move the basic brand upmarket and make a downmarket one. :o

Will not be used on U.S. models. In fact, the grille will probably change, too.

Seems like the Genesis compares more closely to the Infiniti G series, except you get a V8 with the Genesis.

Not that that seems to help. The VQ is a  engine and presented with a choice between the Genesis sedan and G37, I'd take the G in a heartbeat. :o
