so my mom is buying another car. i say 'another' because it will not necessarily be a new one. she has narrowed it down to a used civic (92-93 w/40k miles) or a new hyundai elantra. she has owned a civic before and loved everything about it and wants the longevity that is associated with them (200k+ miles). are any of you familiar with the reliablity of hyundai's, in particular the elantra, and how it compares to the civic? cars are relatively the same price.

Hyundai's cars are terrible...Things falla part so easily in and out. If you're going to go import go Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

I'm assuming you mean an 02-03?

A Hyundai will not even compare to a civic in terms of reliability. Go with the civic.

While Hyundais were pretty low-quality in the 80s and 90s, new ones are actually very reliable. JD Power has had Hyundai tied for second place in initial quality, dead even with Honda and Toyota, for the past couple years.

They also come with that ridiculous 10/100k warranty, compared to the Civic's 3/36k, which in this case has already run out.

I am only acquainted with one person who owns a newer Hyundai - an Elantra, in fact - and she's been happy with it. Sample size of one is not good for much, but IME those who call them irredeemable pieces of crap are just working off of Hyundai's past reputation of 10-20 years ago, rather than an accurate sense of how good they are now. It may be "less reliable" than a Civic, but if that's the difference between something major going wrong at 130k instead of at 170k... well, you're breaking even. And factor theft insurance into the cost of ownership :o

I happen to really like the Elantra GT, due to fun-to-drive factor, the hatchback, the styling, and the huge array of standard features for the price. It was on my short list at one point. (though I guess it is the base model you are looking at, not the GT)

The only thing I see wrong with an Elantra is the styling. I'm hoping they give it a good facelift soon.

my friends teggy got stolen, so his parents gave him their 02' accent hatch back 5spd. the thing is a piece of garbage. the tranny is uber-fucked. it is sloooow as balls, the interior is falling apart, and the tranny is garbage (grinds gears like crazzzzy) and it has less than 45k miles :ugh2:

Whats the problem, its under warrenty go get the tranny fixed. If you expect a Hyundai to be anything but slow :ugh: They are not performance cars. sounds like someone thought it was a racecar and beat it to hell, but Hyundai will still fix it.

89 hp from a car built in 2002 is a bit lack luster. i bet my 91 base model sentra would put out more HP than that TODAY. and it left the factory with a rated 110hp :ugh2:

They were built to be a commuter not performance so HP is irrelavent. Its HP is sufficient for its intended use the car was built for.

The tranny problems again are covered under warrenty.

Hyundai's quality has really improved in the past couple years. Just saying that they are pieces of crap is ignant. Do some reading and you'll find that they are neck and neck with Honda and Toyota. Their resale is going to be lower, but that may improve by the time you go to sell it too. I own a '05 Toyota, but if the '06 Sonata was around when I was looking the Sonata probably would have won.
