If a woman is home alone sleeping and she believes theres a burglar attempting to break in do you think she's better off trying to hide where she is, or turn on the lights and make the intruder aware someone is home?

No enough detail. Is she armed, are there others in the house, is she on the phone with 911?

Get out of bed, grab shotgun, close and lock bedroom door, call 911.

It's what I advised my girlfriend to do but it's an AR instead of a shotgun in our scenario. I told her she's got 30 rounds so keep pulling the trigger.

I did this once here in NY. 911 told me to clear the house and call back if I see anything. :hsugh:

Clearing a house is a dangerous endeavor, very dangerous in fact. I've done mock building searches with one other person back when I was doing police explorers and just about every time I ended up 'dead'.

It pretty much taught me that you need a team and superior firepower to clear a building with any kind of advantage.

Well you get out of bed, lock the bedroom door, and call 911. Then you curse yourself for not having a weapon as you sit defenseless.

Right, which is why I'm glad I've had some practice doing it.

Yeah, 911 told me to look around and if I saw a person call back and they would send an officer.

This line of thought has convinced me I can't rely on the police. I'm looking into getting my first gun in the near future. And adding some motion sensing exterior lights and downstairs window alarms to my house.

If she's a liberal, she should take her panties off, lube up, and start making excuses for why she's about to get raped and how it's not the rapist's fault.

One night this spring when i was home it was pretty cool out so we left the windows open. When it came time to go to bed my father said he was just going to leave them open and I asked if that was wise he said, and I quote, "If anyone comes in, we'll kill them". So I just checked my shotgun, put it next to my bed, and we turned the alarm on with the windows off (interior motion sensors on).

My father ran all of the police explorers stuff I did back when I was younger (he was a cop for 28 years and is now a Deputy US Marshall) and he was hardcore about proper procedure. I always complained that he was killing the fun, but now I thank him because I know what I'm doing.

The police can help protect you, but when it comes down to it, you're responsible to take measures to ensure your own safety.

Is your AV just a picture or is that a button / emblem thing I can actually purchase?

Also, is there a high-res version I could use as a background?

Once I find mine, I can snap a close up pic with my DSLR and post a high-res version.

Well you all have good suggestions, but I was looking for the best choice between hiding and letting the burglar know you are home

I think a defining factor would be the willingness of the resident to drop a hammer on someone.
    Most people wouldn't.
    Hell, my wife wouldn't.
Not a dig against those people - you are who you are.
Like Clint said, "A man's gotta know his limitations."
No sense pulling a weapon on someone if you're not emotionally prepared to pull the trigger.

... and in this forum you are going to be told (repeatedly) that being in that situation unarmed is bad regardless of what you do. :dunno:

If you alert them to your presence, it may cause them to run, it may cause them to come straight for you. In the case you, who does not have weapons, you'd sure as shit be PRAYING it's the former.

Sounds like basic defensive tactics 101. You're the one moving around, like;y making your position known. You can't have your eyes and weapon everywhere while the perp needs only wait for you to present yourself or screw up.

id say hide. but if you got a gun, just sit and wait until the intruder comes around a corner (assuming you have no kids, if you have kids then you better go hunting)

Not enough details because it's so situational.

In an 800 sq ft house, there's not many places to hide....escape may be the best bet. However, in a 3,000 sq ft house, perhaps there are good places to hide.

What about an alarm/cell phone?? Is there any chance the authorities would be notified automatically??

And you say no weapons but there are still weapons in every house. A baseball bat or golf club can be lethal in the right hands. Why about kitchen knives?? What about a vase or beer bottle?

Like someone else said, alerting them might make them run or perhaps not. If it's a female, it might make them charge. There are also various accounts of people that fought back and it only served to make the attacker more violent.

Years ago I read an article that advocated faking being asleep, kind of along the theory of playing dead to an attacking bear. I would think this is only be a strategy if the home owner wakes up with the burglar in the room.

IMO there are just too many variables and unknowns. Most people like to think in dichotomies but they rarely simulate real life.
