i had good form, abs were tight, i was warm, etc. i've done gm's for years and never had a problem.

on my first set last tuesday, i loaded up 155lbs and went at it.. around the six rep i felt a weird twinge in my lower back, just to the left of the spine. i refocused, kept my core tight, and finished off 10. it was obvious though that there was something wrong so i called it a night.

the pain was pretty bad the next couple of days. i've been taking 900mg of naproxen, icing 3-5 times a day, and doing various stretches. i'm fine walking around and what not, but bending forward still bothers me. any ideas what i've screwed up?

cliffs: did gms a week ago, felt twinge in lower back. been icing, resting, etc. feeling better, but still can't bend forward without pain.

don't stretch your low back.... brisk walking w/ arm swing is about the best thing you can do. If you can do a quadruped hip extension or birddog without pain then start doing those.

    thanks :bigthumb:

i can do them both without any discomfort. i've seen you post about not stretching/rolling the lower back before and i've kept that in mind with this injury.. why is that?

as far as stretching goes, i'm currently doing static stretches of the calves, hams, quads, and glutes after hot showers.

With the lower back, like the knee, you want to increase stability, preventing movement rather than creating it. Lumbar flexibility is associated with greater rates of injury—you can go to pubmed and type in Solomonow if you want to see studies.

right about the same as me, about the same time

was doing bottom start cambered bar GM's... got into a competition with my training partners, got up to 425, went well.. then loaded up 445 and pop, twinge down my leg... i've been alternating ice and heating pad, bed rest, making an appt tomorrow.

    sucks.

i got nothing to add, other than that i feel your pain :(

oftentimes good mornings, especially starting from the bottom, turn into quarter squats

    sorta.

the difference between a squat and a good morning from the bottom position is where the weight centers on you, and the placement of your hips. if your hips are high and the bar is out infront of you (and the bar is low enough) its still a good morning.

at least thats how i see it.

but then again, who cares. max effort day isn't about arguing about depth or what board to use or how your tuck is... its about getting under the bar and getting quality work in at over 90% intensity. straight up just busting ass, and i assure you... this was achieved.

I'm sure Westside Barbell knows what intensity is and the way the GM is described by Louie does not look like what happens nowadays. It is an ego thing. The chain suspended GM's of today are setup so that you rock into them and quarter squat it up. It is a big reason why tons of PL's use breifs or even suits with straps down on the movement.. because of the squatting part of it that wasn't used awhile ago.

There's nothing wrong with it, if it helps people squat more then go for it.. although in my opinion doing GM's with good form of sets of 5 or so as a submaximal movement is better for your squat and deadlift.

To paraphrase louie: If you can good morning more than you squat then you are doing good mornings wrong.

cambered bar good mornings kinda cater to my strong points. hamstrings, glutes, low back... plus i really squeeze the bar well from that position.

as strong as i look with the cambered bar, i am equally and oppositely humbled by the safety squat bar.

it's just a matter of where i'm weak and where i'm strong :o

No dude, read any and ever related question at EFS in the history of the site. Every elite there says if you can GM as much as you can squat you are doing GM's wrong..

the METAL gym GMs are interesting since they have like 900+ on the bar, wear gear, and have a tiny ROM...but I guess they've found what works for their squat. Standard GMs though, no way should you be squatting less
