I've never gone hunting. Ever. My girlfriend's stepfather wants to take me hunting now that I have a shotgun. Hunt what, I don't know...whatever's in season in Iowa in the fall and can be shot with a gun. So what tips does WMD have for me? I'd assume since hunting usually requires a firearm (or bow), WMD would know be knowledgable.

00 Buck will take down any big game you have in Iowa. Getting close is the hard part.

Deer are delicious. I've never hunted myself but I appreciate my friends who do and give me deer.

Shoot the furry (or feathered) animal, and not the stepfather. That's about all there is to it.

I hope they give you venison. Having never hunted, I'm afraid you wouldn't know what to do with a whole deer:)

I always cook it for my friends, as I'm not sure they could do it right

You and me both. Basically if it's in season and in Iowa in September, we're hunting it. I'm *guessing* deer. Should I put my Federal slugs to work?

Heh they do, I wouldn't know what to do with a whole deer any more than I knew what to do with the adult size tricycle I woke up to find in my front yard last year.

Yeah that would really suck if I shot him as he's the only one in either my family or my girlfriend's family who really supports my hobby/addiction.

It will probably be dove hunting. I reckon you could dog drive deer, but i'm not a fan of that kind of hunting.

No, no dogs. All of our dogs are shelter/rescue dogs and many of them are gun-shy. One was even shot in the ass repeatedly with birdshot

Just checked - Iowa doesn't have a dove season, which sucks for y'all. Crow hunting can be fun though.

If you are hunting deer with a shotgun, i would suggest using buckshot and not slugs. As an inexperienced hunter, you will get the shakes, and a mishit with a slug could mean a long, drawn-out death for the deer.

Not trying to be stupid here, but what I'd recommend (and what I judge other hunters by) is safety first. It's easy to get caught up in excitement and forget the basics.

Keep the safety on at all times, up until the actual moment you have shouldered your shotgun and are ready to pull the trigger.

After you shoot, immediately put the gun back on safe again.

Keep you finger off of the trigger unless you're going to shoot.

Be aware of where your fellow hunter(s) are at all times, don't swing on game when there is a chance the muzzle will point in their direction.

Finally, remember to drink the blood of your first kill.

    Wisconsin. Seriously.

GF's stepfather taking you hunting but they didn't tell you what?

You better have some comfortable running shoes! :noes:

j/k, in all seriousness remember safety first. It won't make a good first impression when you shoot your maybe future FIL with buckshot in the ass.

Just some Sambar, which is one of the few things on the ranch I'm we're not allowed to shoot :o There was a cow and a calf in front of us and two bulls pretty far out the side window.

Pretty good pic of one I googled

Yeah, someone else mentioned it as well but get familiar with all the licenses and game regulations before you go. Just hit up the Iowa DNR's website. It can get expensive if a game warden comes up on you and you don't know what you are doing and are violating all kinds of regulations.

We've gone shooting multiple times. I've just never hunted.
