I might go hog huntin' in a month or two. I could either use my 12gauge or my M44.

Anyone gone hunting with milsurp 54r ammo? Safe to use? Don't know whether the corrosive ammo is ok or not....:o

most states have laws against ball ammo (all milsurp ammo is ball) for hunting. gotta use jhp or jsp.

    Ah yes, good point.

Will look that up. Or if someone from SC knows and wants to tell me, that'd work too. :big grin:

You won't get very good performance with most mil-surp x54R ammo. I'd definitely get some good new production soft point if you choose to go with the M44.

well then none of them did well. the jsp did the best of the group, but not too signifigantly better, it seems.

Therious? I wouldn't want to be shot by a 54R round, regarlesss of FMJ or HP.

Yeah, those are just standard Russian caliber FMJ military rounds plus the commercial 7.62x39. If you want a large permanent cavity and decent acuracy from 7.62x54, you'll need a commercially manufactured JSP.

The 7n6 and M67 bullets are pretty good performers for FMJs in Russian calibers.

Me either :o I've read a few reports of 7.62x39 and 7.62x54 just leaving a .30 cal hole when going through extremities like arms or hands or whatever. for them to do any significant damage then need a lot more room to tumble.

Get some Silver Bear 203 grain Soft Point. I took a deer down at 100 yards with a neck shot handily. It expanded too.

Between this and the chart I'm almost in tears. I'm not used to sound terminal ballistics discussions here.

Please disregard my last post. I meant to suggest the purchasing of blended metal and fang face rounds.

Winchester makes a soft point hunting round. I found it locally for about $25/20. I think Wolf makes it too.
