What are you hunting, what kind of terrain, walking, sitting in a stand?

I wouldn't go smaller than a .25, something like a .260, 7mm-08, .308, 270, .30-06 etc. would be a good choice. Don't buy a bench style rifle (i.e. anything with a heavy barrel, wide forend, things like that) and keep the barrel length under 24" and the weight with scope under 8lbs. Knowing what state/region would really help deciding too.

.308 would be a good choice, imo. 20" barrel, probably. Remington 700 is very popular Savage 10FP is another popular choice.

More deer have be harvested with the 30-06 than any other caliber.

Get a .243, .270 .30-30 or .30-06. It really doesn't matter which one. Those are the most popular deer calibers in Southern Oklahoma.

Let me be the first to recommend a military style weapon aka assault rifle.

    AR-15 chambered in 7.62 x 51 NATO?
    AK-47?

You could also use them for SHTF situations.

Also known as the AR-10 and fantastically more expensive than an AR-15...

SKS seems to be far more popular than the AK-47 and cheaper, but an AK would also cut it, I suppose.

    :uh:

    Thanks.

Truth is, I've never actually looked at AR-10 pattern rifles due to the cost of ammunition.

I'd get a .30-06 because of how common the guns and ammo are and can be used for much larger game if you choose to in the future.

    A 270 isn't bad though.

    I agree except I'd exclude the .243.

.270 and .30-06 are my choices because of the wide range of ammo you can get for both.

Go get you a used Rem 700 in 270 and spend the rest of your money on a badass scope and a jewell trigger.
