    Man finds rocket while hunting

    The Associated Press

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Police briefly evacuated a neighborhood to take possession of a military-grade rocket that was discovered by a coyote hunter.

The man saw the rocket sticking out of the ground, dug it up and took it home Sunday. He called police when he realized it might not be safe to keep.

"It comes from a shoulder-fired weapon like a bazooka," St. George bomb-squad commander Jason Whipple said Tuesday. "It was an old piece of ordnance, from back in the '50s and '60s."

The area where the rocket was found was a former National Guard firing range, he said.

Authorities did not know if it was a live round.

"The part that would have told us that had been rusted over," Whipple said.

The 2-foot-long rocket was taken to a remote area of Washington County and destroyed.

:werd: No way I would dig up a rocket out of the ground. I've shot ammo from the 50's, who's to say a rocket from the 60's won't blow my ass up?

The LAW rocket was the M72 series (currently upto the M72A7 variant). The two practice variants were fired out of a modified LAW launcher. The diameters and lengths of these practice rockets were much smaller than the full-up rocket; therefore couldn't be easily confused with a "live" rocket.

It sounds like the are describing an older 3.5 rocket. Both the live and prac 3.5's were identical in dimension/construction and could only be identified by markings. In addition, the 3.5 was made out of steel (which rusts) and the LAW was predominately constructed of aluminum (which doesn't).

So your thinking it might have been one of the older rocket systems from say WWII? I mean the national guard does keep stuff longer than the US military.

Leaning that way 'cause the full-up LAW is mostly made out of aluminum..the warhead might be light case steel which could rust but still couldn't be confused with the practice variants. 3.5" rocket has markings on the steel fuze body to help identify the variant and, if rusty, would make identification difficult.

Of course, it is a LEO bomb squad so it may have been a mortar. OCSD bomb tech called a discus found in a canal near a high school a landmine.
