CLARKSVILLE, Md. - Maryland authorities have charged an Ellicott City man with negligent hunting after a stray shotgun slug broke the window of a daycare center.

Forty-one-year-old Richard Hoenes didn't immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press seeking a comment on the charge filed against him by the state Natural Resources Police.

Sgt. Ken Turner says Hoenes was hunting deer on private property when he fired the shot Dec. 10 from more than 270 yards away from the occupied daycare center.

Police have said Hoenes was beyond the statutory 150-yard safety zone but failed to make sure of what was beyond his target.
