During a largely horrible and mismanaged drill weekend, a couple of us got to talking while having a smoke outside the barracks. We were curious if it might be possible to organize a union? Hypothetically speaking, what if we got everybody in the company to join and did everything legally necessary to form a union. Union membership would be open to officers and enlisted not serving in leadership positions. I am part of a union in my current job as well as my previous job and have seen the benefits of being part of such an organization.

I know it would never happen, but I'd love to hear some thoughts and opinions. Might make for some intriguing debate too.

I think UCMJ prohibits it.

Not probably, it does prohibit it.

Want to join a professional organization that looks out for your well being? Join AUSA. That's about as close as you are going to get.

What would a union accomplish in the military?

Article 134 if they really wanted to hit you on it.
ART. 89 DISRESPECT TOWARD SUPERIOR COMMISSIONED OFFICER
ART. 94. MUTINY OR SEDITION

I just browsed through the UCMJ real quick and found what they possibly could hit you on depending on how bad they had it out for you

yeahhhhhh.... I don't think that would work at all.

1. you won't be able to have any say over your pay and benefits anyway
2. they will throw your ass in jail if you go on strike
3. they will throw your ass in jail if you even bring up the thought of having a strike
4. you already are the sole providers of your occupation so having a union in that regard means nothing.

I guess what made me think of this was that I'm union for my technician job and I wear a uniform. So I guess this is what it would be like then, huh?
