I'm familiar with building desktop pc's but I haven't read a lot about media centers. I see a fair amount of people throwing dual cores and such into them and that just seems excessive to me. What parts can I kinda skimp on and what are the absolute must haves in a home theater pc? I have an xbox with XBMC on it doing the job right now but I'd rather start looking into a HTPC because I plan on getting a projector in the upcoming months. What components do you guys have in your HTPC's or which parts would you put in yours considering a reasonable budget?

That forum seems to be nearly dead with only a few posts in 2007 but it linked me to this forum: http://www.htpcnews.com/index.php which seems pretty alive and kicking. Thanks for the link. There seems to be quite a spread on what people put into them. If you have a HTPC please post specs and reasons.

http://www.2cpu.com/review.php?id=106 a pretty good guide that I've found, it even breaks down which of the popular software is capable of what. This has been the most help that I've found so far.
