For those that do not know the ongoing drama that this thread resolves, here is some quick history. About a month and a half ago, I noticed that one of my HRE wheels was badly cracking through the spokes:

    http://www.ziplink.net/~ctroiane/junk/small

Obviously very concerned, I removed the wheel and sent it off to HRE for their inspection and solution. Then, to my horror, I noticed as I swapped my wheels for the temporary E46 M3 knockoffs that all four of my HREs had developed cracks at the exact same spots on all of the spokes! I did not make this newest piece of information public because I was waiting to see how HRE would handle the problem.

This is how HRE deals with their customers. The response came today:

    Email One

    Dear Chris:

Sorry for the delay, I thought my engineer had given you a call. Anyway, here is the scoop. We are going to replace the centers under warranty. In essence, you will be receiving new wheels. We will reuse any good components on the wheels such as the inners and outers. You will also receive new assembly hardware in each wheel. I will give you a more detailed update as far as delivery time probably on Monday. If you have any questions, please call or email me today, as I will be out on Friday and back on Monday.

    Sincerely,

    Guy Atherton

    Email Two

    Dear Chris:

Well it's only been about one hour since my last email, but I just got some great news. Your set of wheels fell into a time when we recalled the model 547. You originally purchase the wheels from Butler Tire, and we tried to contact you through Butler with no success. So the good news is that we have already built a new set of wheels that should be shipped out today. They are "Brand Spanking New" and should ship today. When we originally talked we had a feeling you may have been one of the customers we could not reach to recall the parts, but we wanted to make sure.

Like I said we, we do stand behind our product and we appreciate your patience. Please call me if you have any questions.

    Sincerely,

    Guy Atherton

    ******************************

I will spare everyone the extent of my satisfaction with the ultimate resolution of this potentially explosive and dramatic situation. HRE has come through in spades, with the extent of the problem easily answered by the extent of their solution. I will now have a new set of freshly made HREs in my posession next week, and will blissfully continue to support their product as the finest wheel manufacturer in the world, and now with the added piece of mind that they stand by their product 100%.

HREs look great. You really have to see them in real life to appreciate them.

Here are some photos of my friend's E46 M3 with the HRE 546 wheels painted Charcoal.

The fronts are 19x8.5 and the rears are 19x10 wrapped in Nitto 555.

Ehm, do us all a favor and edit your post with some smaller pics. Huge pics like that make it a pain in the ass to read the thread because you have to scroll back and forth. If you want to use the big pics, simply link to them instead of inserting them into the thread.

I like HRE but the 546s don't belong on a Euro. They look like they came of a Supra or something. Just MO.

They are decently light, but not in the same league as Fikse, Volk, or the SSR Competitions (which have been getting some bad press lately for being too flimsy). My 17" 547s weighed in at 18.1 lbs for the 7.5" and 19.x for the 8.5" - not too bad, but not super light. My friend's polished 19" 546s weighed in at 24 lbs, and I think Josh's (black AA Turbo M3 coupe) 18" 540s weigh about 21/22 lbs.

From what I understand, they do all have the bolt pattern, from the 540 to the 340, and they do not make a one piece wheel.

CG: I see exactly where you are coming from and completely agree, but my appreciation for the quality of the 546 has always quelled my distaste at seeing it on a BMW. My friend runs fully polished 546s on his AA Stage IV 3.2L turbo TI, and while their obscenity fit the car's outrageous acumen I always thought they lacked a bit of ...class, if you will. I think it's something about the spokes, and the way they taper on the blade, that is reminisce of a Japanese look.
Another Cali person I know runs those same anodized 546s on his now candy apple red Mechtech turbo, which used to be white. I always thought they looked better on the white car, and fob's pictures prove it (to me). That M3, even as it sits with those 546s that I technically do not like, is one stunning ride. I guarantee that in person, that car would have you crossing the street and walking an extra blck down just to get a closer look, even if it was to ultimately say "no thanks on the wheels." :big grin:

fob: nice car. I saw it on the DTM E46 forum.
