but didn't quite take in enough calories, mainly by having protein shakes but not eating a lot each day.

I mean on a constant basis. Would your muscles still grow because of the protein? Would you just feel fatigued?

    :dunno:

You need calories to grow.. the actual process of gaining muscle uses calories.

The protein is only the building blocks, but without the builders (the calories) it might help prevent muscle loss but you won't gain much either.

    no

hypertrophy is a metabolic luxury. if you're not getting enough cals, your body will use the energy in protein for digestion, breathing, movement, etc.

very minor growth may occur from the repair of the microtears causes by working out, but noticeable growth of the muscles (via new cell growth) won't occur without an excess of calories

I dunno, just thought of how I've been the last couple of weeks. I really am only eating 3 or 4 times a day, healthy when I do eat-veggies, lots of chicken breast. But while I generally have 4-5 protein shakes a day either mixed with water or skim milk. I'm getting the bulk of my protein from supps and probably only eat about 1,500 calories a day.

in theory protein can also be used as the "builders", though I've never heard of anybody bulking on a keto diet

if you wanna gain muscle you need a better diet then that, namely, more cals (unless you're a midget, in which case you migth wanna PM BDR :naughty:), more carbs & importantly, more fat

you def. need more cals. when i first started lifting by myself i wasn't eating enough (maybe ~2500 cals) AND doing cardio and i didnt see any gains... and i was at the gym for like a month. i dropped cardio and bumped the cals to 2900-3000 three weeks ago and am seeing progress now.

I was thinking about that too. I'm 5'10, 180 lbs with a small belly. I wondered if I lifted and did cardio if my gut would go away and I would build muscle at the same time.

Protein has 4 calories per gram. If you got 250 grams of protein you would get 1000 calories. It would be pretty hard to get 250 grams of protein without any fat/carbs/fiber so you wouldn't feel full. And probably feel pretty hungry.

This happened to me in February. I went on this huge month and half ordeal where I had this crazy ideal I was getting fat.

    Protein intake was approx: 150-170g
Calorie intake was approx 1800-2000 cal

I lost 15lbs in the time period. No visual muscle growth, although i looked extremely toned and felt stronger.

I def. wouldn't mind losing a few pounds, probably 7-10 and then putting it back on in muscle. Just am never sure if I should do only cardio until I lose the weight and then lift, or just lift and do cardio.

    Hey dude,
The biggest and bes tip I can give you is to use www.fitday.com to track your diet.

Create custom foods from the nutritional info on the packets of the food you eat.

I GUARANTEE you will be surprised at what you're eating. Every skinny guy SWEARS he's eating lots, but he never is. And every fat guy SWEARS he eats <2000kcal a day, and he never does.

Using fitday will help you understand much better what's going on with your diet and your body. And I think knowing WHAT you're eating is really really important! It's certainly the best thing I ever did in terms of trying to gain muscle mass.

I think it's easier to over eat than under eat for most people.

eat more cals than you expend on a daily basis = enough cals for muscle growth.

less cals than you expend a day = weight loss + catabolic :noes:
