Since insurance will cost me an arm and a fucking leg (the cheapest I've found so far is $277/mo), I'm looking at the possibility of just not getting a car until I get back from my first deployment. I'm just wondering if it's a real option or if I'll need a car when I arrive down in Ft. Stewart.

    Any info would be appreciated.

I've known quite a few of junior enlisted who have gotten by for a few years without a car....if you're not to embarrassed to hit up people for rides and use public transportation...then it's probably a great way to save money.

get a bicycle, you'll be fine...with the exception of Fri/Sat night clubbing with friends, but then those are times you can ride with someone anyway.

just get a junker to get around. insurance cant be too bad on an 80something ford fiesta. I hate when new guys come in w/o a ride and are always whoring rides everywhere...

go to a car auction and pick up a beater. Military pay should cover something like that for insurance.

Why is your rate so high? I'm paying $1200/yr for full coverage plus glass on a fullsize car in NYC.

I'm paying 210/month on 4 cars! 91 bmw 850, 91 nissan nx2000, 03 nissan altima, and an 07 nissan versa. They all have full coverage but the nx. BTW I'm 22 w/ clean record for the last 4 years.

USAA factors your credit rating into their decision on your insurance rate. I've never used them or asked them for a quote, but a Platoon SGT I had once was all pissed off after the quote they gave him. He asked why and their reply was that his credit was shot.

the worst ones are the dudes who you don't really like to begin with and they magically hop in your car come lunch time. If a motherfucker needs a ride to something that involves work, i don't have a problem giving him a lift, but otherwise he's on his own

Find that guy in your unit who is a bit akward socially and befriend him. He'll be happy to give you a ride wherever you want to go. I knew soldiers who were trusting enough that they would let you borrow their car. When I was reclassing at Ft Gordon a couple years ago, I definitely could have gotten around without a vehicle. Just be cool and it will work out.

    1. Recommend shopping around for insurance and/or adjusting your coverages.

    2. Recommend putting your vehicle on your parents policy.

Yep. Thats what the Marines tell their jr. enlisted here on Okinawa. I don't think a Marine E-5 and below can drive a car at all.
