I got on the computer and it seems to be infected because when i came back to it today, it had slowed down considerably. I had just finished doing a virus scan and stuff yesterday, but last night my dad got on the computer to do "work." When he does work for his job(s), he often spends about 30 to 45 min looking at porn.

The computer is in the living room near the front door and right in sight of the stairs so it is easy to see what people are looking at. My dad doesn't make any attempt to minimize the screen . he will only do it when he thinks nobody is around and he tries to turn teh screen to the wall but you can still see naked ass and whatever:rofl:

anyway, the computer is coming to a crawl and I was having problems loading pages. My bookmarks have also been changed to adult websites. THIS BLOWs. how do I talk to my dad about this , so the computer doesn't crash? I try to clean up after my activities and keep the computer healthy, but he goes and destroys all the work I've done

    :squint:

I'm not paying for the computer or the Internet, but i really don't feel like having to go across town for limited net acceess for when I really need i t

Use a different browser that he won't know to open. Or if you like the current browser, set the default browser to a new one you install and have him use that.

I'll assume you're on Windows XP. Everybody who uses the computer should have a seperate account, for starters. Also, the users should not have admin rights when at all avoidable. This alone with drastically cut down his ability to screw up the system, or at worst, he would only gunk up his own profile.

Or you can rebuild the system with linux. That'll show him. ;)

Sorry, I have no advice about how to talk to him about his porn habits though.

Say to your dad, Dad all that downloading of porn is slowing down the computer!.

That way you won't attack your dad for watching porn, but you say that you are getting a problem with all those virusses that are derived from it.

If your using windows xp goto

    C:\Documents and Settings\(usually your name is here) \Local Settings\Temp

and delete its contents, this will speed up the computer and is completely safe. Its a hidden directory so make sure to 'unhide' the folders.

    So ...

is your dad using YOUR computer?
    or
    are you using HIS computer?

if the former, I suggest virus scanner, spyware blocker, and some porn blocking software. Clamp that shit down.

if its the latter, I suggest you get your own computer.

    if you have xp

    go to start

    go to all programs

    go to acessories

    then go to system tools

then go to system restore and restore to an earilier time.

also spray the keyboard with lysol when the powers off.

ya I know that but right now, i don't have the means or money to get my own line for Internet access (I have my own computer) or a wireless adapter or router, so for now I need to ask him not to potentially crash the computer where a lot of my work is saved

Dad's do that a lot....screw up the computer, that is. Not necesarily the porn.

My dad's problem is that he keeps "trying out" new shareware applications all the time and ends up screwing things up on a weekly basis. I'm "free tech support" whenever I go visit.

Nothing you can do about the porn, but it's worth educating him about common sense surfing habits to avoid clicking on things that may cause problems (e.g., pop ups, unsecure web forms, mailing lists, online promotions, etc.)

Get a CD and burn your info onto it. Take your work to a local library.

    Sorry, but,:mamoru: @ that comment.
Perhaps just telling him that "whatever" he's been using the PC for has been messing it up, w/o mentioning the porn?

Also, maybe the different browser thing?

Go look at the history, pull up the raunchiest pron you can, and leave that window open when you get off the computer.

If you don't do what I said, which is simple and totally fixes your problem btw, then please do what Peyomp said & report back.

All I can say is that if I ever caught my dad looking at porn I would go to great lengths to prevent him from knowing that I saw him. My dad would be extremely embarassed over something like that (he is a very proud man). I would rather pick up extra work in order to buy myself wireless than adress the issue with him. Now if it was my computer he was messing up then I'd have to consider confronting him about it. (though I still probably wouldn't).

If he turns the screen away and only does it in "private" then I would assume that he would be embarassed as well, and since it is his computer I wouldn't confront him with it.

Luckily This situation never happened to me when I lived with my father. He never even knew how to turn a computer on much less use one.

since you have a comp, ask him for the $60 for a wireless setup. tell him that this way he can have his comp time, and you can as well.

Just tell him, "hey, find better porn sites, the ones you're looknig at now are fucking up the computer!"

Say it very casually, as if him looking at porn is not at all an uncomfortable topic.

Background Plan: Set the background image to a money shot he looked at the previous session. Then vehemently deny doing it. Blame it on spyware.

Well then be happy that you have atleast something you can use at your house instead of complaining about it.

If my kid came to me about what you are talking about, id just not let them use the computer anymore. Solves that problem.

I still haven't come up with a viable solution. I suggested he use the virus scanner because I had been finding viruses and stuff. I hint that i don't know HOW they get on there but that it probably comes from accessing certain pages, but he was doing it again the other day.

For those who say "get your own computer" and "be thankful you can use what you have," how about donating money to this cause? I don't have money to throw at another line at the moment. I asked how I could talk to my dad about this stuff because there is more than just my documents on the computer. My mom's important documents are on here too and they are paying too much on the computer to have it crash AGAIN because my dad is irresponsible with his surfing habits
