    this is for a friend.......

He just recently installed a new HardDrive
Now when he bought his computer used, it did not come with ANY startup discs

So, is there any way to install the operating sytem from his old hard drive onto his new one without buying XP new?

    its a Gateway........

    Thanx,
    Navi

With XP it's unlikely to be able to transfer over like that in any semi-easy fashion, unless you have the CD key and a copy of XP lying around.

You can find programs that will tell you what your current CD key is. Since he is a legitimate owner he should be OK using a friend's CD and using his original CD key.

thats the problem, we cannot find anyone that has an XP disc, most people around here still have win98!!!!

I considered installing my win98, and then when we can find someone with XP and update then.....like when school gets back in (we live in the boondocks)
but, how hard is it to switch from 98 to XP?

Well, really every time you change your OS it'd be best to reformat. Upgrading is always worse.
