Hi I am testing a softphone built using Java on my website. I have it hosted on a shared hosting account with a Webhost specialising in Java hosting. Currently it works, but I want to firewall of certain ports so that traffic data to the softphone is blocked. In essense I just want to make sure the softphone does not work.

I can't change the firewall settings on my webhost because it's a shared hosting environment. Is there anyway to block ports using .htaccess or something similar?

Alternatively is there anyway to just simply make sure the Java applet does not work? I need to make sure I know all possible ways to block traffic to the Java softphone.

If you built it, or even if you didn't but are just testing it, how can you not know how to "discreetly" screw it up?

I smell :bs:... sounds to me like you're trying to sabotage someone else's work.

if it were your softphone java applet, you could simply chmod the applet to deny the web-user access. But you would have known that if this was your site :ugh:

Ok here's the full story. I got a Coder (Coder A) to design me this Java softphone. I contracted him from Pakistan via a freelance website. Initially the softphone didn't work and I told him I wanted a refund. Coder A said he will go back and redesign the softphone. In the meantime, I found another Coder (Coder b) on the same site that's willing to design the softphone for half price. He has also shown me a working version, that just needs a few features added. So I want to make sure when Coder A gets back to me, the softphone doesn't work so I can get a refund so I can hire Coder B.

You actually have a contract with the first coder? We can't help you dude. Just e-mail him back and say you found someone else to do it, pay him for the work he's done thus far and be done with it. He should be ok with that. If not, there isn't much he can do to you from Pakistan.

Sucks. But you know, contracts exist for a reason. In this case, it's protecting his ass from getting ripped off by you. Dude's probably feeding his family off the money you owe him. Unless you had to refinance your mortgage to pay for Coder A's work, just pay him the balance due and get Coder B to set up your softphone the way you want. Live and learn. Always, always, always try before you buy.

Agreed with above. If you had a contract, then fulfill it. If there's no contract, or he breeched it, then take that route. But deception is NEVER the answer.

That's a pretty shitbag thing to do...

    1. lie to us
    2. lie to him
    3. not pay someone for work you contracted

I'll laugh when your shitty ethics come back to bite you and you get fired for putting the company at risk of a lawsuit worth more than a softphone would have costed.

Pay him double, he probably makes half what you make and works harder.
