Almost every other class I attend, my neck cramps up. Anytime someone goes for my neck in some form (clock choke, triangles, etc), my neck/trap will start to hurt. It's also a possibility it's borderline neck cranks... I believe I stretch it quite well. If I try too touch my ear to my shoulder, I'll have difficulty. I'll also have a hard time getting my chin to my clavicle bone. My instructor said to just ice it 3x a day and consider getting a different pillow (like those wavey ones). Anyone have any tips for prevention or something?

My follow stretches for it + rolling neck stretch:

I know heat and massage helps loosing muscles and tissue up while ice reduces swelling and eases pain but tightens the muscles up.

My advice is to use heat pads and massage to loosing things up. Also eating foods high in potassium like bananas is great to reduce cramping

I've got chronic lower back pain, but it never seems to bother me too much once I've started rolling. :dunno:

I might just throw an Icy Hot pad on my neck but I don't want to rely on that thing. I eat a banana + protein shake 2 hours before class. :hs:

I do a version of the 2 above stretches for my neck, but I'm not nearly as flexible as either person. My neck does a lot better since I've been doing them before I roll. Got them from my grandma (no joke) and a friend that is really into yoga after I complained of neck soreness.

I've broken both my shoulders and they always hurt...I tend to pass on doing rolls in the warmups to make sure I can make it through the class. :o

this is a big one. if you are just doing static stretches try doing a lot more gentle circular motions that ease you into the painful range of motion
