Well I got a new mobo under warranty and now i need to clean my heatsink and cpu. I already tried isopropyl alcohol on the heatsink but none of the old junk is coming off.

Also the shit around the core of the cpu is the old excess thermal compound, its pretty stuck on should i just leave it?

(gently) scrape it off the heatsink with a flathead screwdriver.

the cpu looks fine to me, i dont see that stuff around the edges blocking the path to the heatsink. but, in the past, i have taken a small knife and scraped away residue like this. (GENTLY!!!)

re-paste it and put it all together. after its back in your computer again, just dont tell anyone that the cpu has crusty paste all over it :)

if you are going to try scraping, dont use a screw driver. use a razor blade. There is less of a chance of scratching the metal.
