How would I achieve getting my 'Military occupational skill' duing basic training?
Umm. You usually know what your MOS is before going to Basic. You usually choose your job (which is basically your MOS) at MEPS.
Okay well I know what I want to do, but is there an advanced training program to get a certification for it?
I want to to Military Police, so when I get out I can join a Police force.
Have you talked to a recruiter? you seem really lost...
I was an MP when I was enlisted(before commissioning)
You will go to Basic Training and learn some basic skills that everyone else does, and then as an MP you will most likely stay at the same location in what is called OSUT (One Station Unit Training) with the same Drill Sergeants for another time period in what is called AIT. AIT is Advanced training where you will train on specific skills to your MOS. You will chose your MOS at MEPS because it has to be in your contract and also dictates where you will go to Basic Training and AIT.
Go talk to someone like a recruiter if you have not already, try to find one that is the least shady...
Oh and also just a heads up MPs do not do very much law and order any more. Mostly Combat MP tasks as that is what they are doing in country.
That's hard to do, they all seem this way.
I am pretty ignorant when it comes to the US recruitment system, however I've seen enough stories on this board to know that you should always ask for time to think about it before you sign the dotted line and ask people who know (ie this forum).
This is very true and if you have a friend or family who is or was in the military for a few years take them with you to your meeting with the recruiter, because many recruiters sadly will walk all over someone who knows little about the military.
I luckily had my dad with me when the recruiter said basic training is like summer camp...(although looking back I really enjoyed basic MP school is a blast but tough)
It is just like summer camp. You make new friends, you spend a lot of time outside, the food sucks.
but there are no handjobs, the counselors are assholes, and they pay YOU to go.
You can only unlock the MOS achievement after you complete AIT
This so far is the funniest thing I have read in 2010.
Yeah, just also to let you know, you will be in Fort Leonard wood Missouri and thats where I am right now, actually in the 1 and only pizza hut in FLW and it blows here. Gotta admit. Nothing off post thats really fun in the slightest or interesting and on post, well kinda the same thing. Gotta say, it sucks. Luckily I get out of here in February but yet still gotta come back in June for L4 training (74D BIDS). Either way like everyone said, to become MOS qualified, you must complete AIT and then you are MOS Qualified. Hopefully for you though, you'll get here as the wet winter is ending, seeing as we just got like 6 inches of snow and now its gonna melt during my FTX I shall get nice and muddy (HOOAH). And last thing I got to say is good luck, basic training I thought was awesome but coulda been better. It was a little easier than I would have preferred.
at FLW now for EOBC, and its definitely interesting.
