my mum went to see a 'nutritionist' today about her own health due to upcoming surgery. however, she mentioned that i was into weightlifting and spend money buying protein powder (ON choc). nutritionist told my mum that 6 teaspoons of skim milk powder gives the same amount of protein as my serving of ON whey. lets break it down.

1 serving ON = 30.4g, of which 24g is protein (straight from the tubs label)

6 teaspoons SMP (approx 3 servings apparently) = 24g protein apparently.

right, lets have a closer look at this. 1 teaspoon is approx. 3 grams (according to my tub of creatine) but grams is a weight measurement, teaspoons being a volume. i would guess that skim milk powder is lighter if not the same weight as my creatine, so working off 3 grams per teaspoon, the actually weight of SMP from that 6 teaspoons is 24 grams.

hold on, does that mean that SMP is 100% protein? because thats what this nutritionalist is apparently saying.

so what if SMP is actually lighter than my creatine, and therefore maybe 2.5g in weight per teaspoon? well, 6x2.5=15 grams, so 15 grams of SMP giving 24 grams of protein is ridiculous.

heres an article i found comparing the protein contents of various milk products:

    http://www.cpdmp.cornell.edu/CPDMP/Pages/Publications/Pubs/Milk_Protein_Products.pdf

from this article, page 3 gives a rundown of protein content of different milk and whey products. and i quote:

so skim milk in powdered form is approx. 34-36% protein per gram, whereas the whey im 'wasting my money on' is 80% protein per gram.

so getting back to the original statement from this nutritionist, 6 teaspoons of SMP being 24grams of protein-actually, thats closer too 8.64 grams of protein (36% of 24 grams).

how can someone who calls themselves a nutritionist make completely rubbish claims which defy simple mathematics? not only that, but how can someone see all the math right in front of them and still believe i am wasting my money? skim milk powder is completely useless in relation too protein supplementation. and heres the proof, straight from a powdered milk product i can buy at my local supermarket:

    SUNSHINE Milk Powder
    by Nestle

Ave Qty Protein per 100mL of reconstituted milk powder made up as directed:

    3.4g

    and per 250mL serving:

    6.9g

She's wrong. Protein powder is pretty much the cheapest per gram protein source out there.

oh, for sure its cheaper. but it has less protein per gram (36% compared with 80% for WPC) also tastes a damn sight more attrocious.

its not the stats that gets me going. its the fact that someone with a university degree can make baseless claims, which can easily be proved wrong. and that someone with even less knowledge than the first idiot can suddenly be a faithful convert, and ignore all scientific and mathematical proof when presented with the facts.

my protein powder is 22g protein a serving and works out to be able 50cents per serving. I can get a gallon of skim milk at samsclub for 2 dollars. 3-8oz glasses of skim milk is 24g protein. there are 16-8oz servings in a gallon of milk and it works out to be a little less than 40cents for 3-8oz servings.
    more protein and cheaper.

but... you have to drink a lot more fluid for the protein and take down the extra calories, carbs, etc. with it.

i tried before, couldnt get a word in edgeways. seriously, fuck nutritionists.

heres another gem i heard tonight. this woman my mum works with, apparently her husband is/was a bodybuilder and personal trainer. :)rofl:) apparently he uses skim milk powder and not whey. saving shitloads of money too :hsugh:

skim milk powder isnt even that cheap. last time i saw in the supermarket, it was about 12 dollars for 500 grams. my ON is 2,341 grams. so almost 5 skim milks per ON container. 5x12=60 dollars and my whey cost me 115 dollars. ill pay the extra 55 dollars for my delicious double choc and 80% protein by weight thanks

remember, we are talking about skim milk powder, not skim milk. you mix it with water. compared to normal milk, its shit. i wouldnt dream of saying that milk was useless because i drink a shitload of the stuff.

i mix my whey with real milk half the time, so im getting 10grams+ more protein per shake than the whey alone.

i pay a fair bit here in australia. the online shops run in australia do give discount, but ive found that with shipping its not THAT much cheaper than buying it from a vitamin store.

All the whey protein blend @ 25 dollars per tub = 70.4G protein/dollar

I don't even really get how people call protein powder a 'supplement', it's more what most people would just call a vitamin. It's like popping a multi or something.
