I'm not talking about a major screw up where you need to reinstall, but reinstall just for the hell of it.

I typically reinstall XP Pro every 9-12 months to get a fresh start, keeps my machine on its toes and i actually enjoy reinstalling OS'. And i've also noticed my personal PC has a lot less problems than the ones here at work that have been running XP Pro for years without 1 reinstall, i would reinstall them here too but our resources and time is strictly just too tight.

I have 12 machines on my home network. 11 are running XP Pro which I refresh about every 6 months. I have one Linux box that I never have refreshed. I figure 6 months is a good timeframe because you usually get a lot of extra crap on your box in the amount of time. Nothing beats the feel of a freshly refreshed machine :)

Totally agree, it feels great to see your machine running at 100% as opposed to xx% on a well kept machine or x% :mamoru: on a poorly kept machine.

    Once a year if that...

My machine was formatted about a year ago when I put some new parts in. It has been fine since and I have no need to wipe it out.

I haven't reinstalled Windows XP since 09/01/03. If you keep it clean, it will run forever.

    I'm lucky if I go a month w/o doing it... Nothing beats a squeaky-clean box :)

Every 6 months or so I guess. Servers go longer since I'm not installing anything on them and they're a pain in the ass to shut down for any length of time.

To save yourself some hassle, ghost your image as soon as you get to the logon screen. Unless you add/remove hardware, it will be identical each time you reinstall.

What kind of card was it?

  11. 2000 I'd reinstall every 3-6 months, XP, every 9-12+ months ... I think I got away with 14 months before a goof on my part forced a long-intended rebuild of XP pro recently ...

At the end of each semester i usually wipe my drive (4 months) and toss my ghost image on it. Total time to recover + restore backup of data, about 2 hours. (2 DVD's)

I only reinstall it when I have to. But I never have to because I make daily images.

Once, I did it 3 times in a day... usually every 2 months ... until it said my product-Key has been overused (have to call to activate everytime)... so now i just do a defrag, virus scan, spyware scan and all that.

    Never :mamoru:

I reinstall Linux whenever there's a major new version or when I switch distros. However, Ubuntu has a very nice upgrading system that isn't scary as fuck (like SuSE's was), so I don't think I'll have to re-install for quite a while :wiggle:

Every 6-8 months. Usually it's required because I change enough hardware to make it worth while. I just did it 2 weeks ago, but that was just to put XP 64bit on. I will probably wipe again when the next build of XP 64bit comes out as well.

Never. Computer seems to have the same performance since day one. Then again, I keep close tabs on the registry, files, settings, services, etc.

My record for winxp was about 3 years (first install back when it came out). I'm very anal retentive when it comes to keeping the system clean, so I never seem to have the problems others have with windows. Over the last year or so, I've had several major hw upgrades (cpu and 2 mobos) which forced reinstalls.

My oldest non-windows system (fbsd) is pushing 5 years now, though the system disk is now showing signs of severe age. I first set it up back in college. It's had upgrades, but never a reformat/reinstall. My current linux box's install is about 2.5 years old and it's still on its first...

MS definately has some work to do if they expect common users to be able to maintain the system without having to format every so often.
