I've had my Mac since last July, so it's been well over a year. It's starting to bog down a little and I'm thinking about reformatting. Only thing is I have so much music and shit I want to save and it's gonna take forever to back up.

I'm also thinking about buying an external HDD after I reformat so I can so the time machine thing.

I reformatted mine a few months ago after owning it for a little over a year. I had an external HDD where I normally store all of my music and movies so that wasnt a problem. There are a lot of things you will want to back up (ical, mail (didnt do this and now i cant get one of my accounts to recieve mail), other apps).

im sure other people with more knowledge will comment on how often you should or should not do that.

Use SuperSuper! (name of program) to create an image of your drive on an external. Format and you can restore your files, profiles and settings from the image once the format is complete. I've had mine since last July/August as well and just reformatted and upgraded to leopard using SuperDuper! Went pretty quickly with no real issues.

Use DiskWarrior to replace the directory and iDefrag to defragment. Those will leave you drive in better condition than just an OS reformat and reinstall.

Diskwarrior defrags it as well, not sure about optimizing it but I know it defrags.

i've had my macbook for 3 years now and i reformatted it once. it came with tiger installed, i upgraded to leopard. doing an upgrade install was a mistake, it seemed to be a major memory waster and my shutdown and startup times were in the minutes after a few months.

i just recently formatted and installed leopard. i'm still not happy with leopard's startup time compared to what tiger's startup time was, but since my format and reinstall, things have been much better

I've had my iMac for almost 4 years and I've never reformatted it. It still works great. :dunno:

I don't miss XP and having to reinstall a clean copy of the OS every 3-6 months to keep it running even 1/2 way decently.
