How much would a new video card benefit my older computer?

I'm thinking about buying a 9800GTS/GTX when they come out.

    These are my current Specs:

Antec Sonata 2 Case with 450w Smart Power Power Supply
    ASUS A8N-E nforce4 Motherboard
    AMD X2 3800+ 939pin
    2GB PC 3200 RAM
    XFX 7900GT (520Mhz)
    Raptor 74gb Sata II
    WD 250GB Sata II
    Seagate 500GB Sata II
    Lite-On DVD-RW
    Sony DVD-ROM

    I use 1280 x 1024 for my resolution on a 19" flat panel.

It would help a lot for video card focused games, the 3800+ would be your next bottle neck.

The flat panel is also something of a bottleneck.

The crazy cards really show their stuff at higher resolutions.

Isnt it better that I use a lower resolution? That way i can turn the quality up to max and still get good FPS?

I know F.E.A.R is very GPU dependant. What are some games that are more CPU dependant?

Im thinking about getting that 8800GT, uses about the same power as my 7900GT and is single sloted unlike the GTS/GTX

    Kinda pointless IMO.

The CPU is a much bigger bottleneck. Plus, the top end cards only really shine at maximum quality levels at high res on a big monitor. For a 19 inch 1280x1024 monitor, it's not worth it.

Something like a GF8800GTS 320mb would suit your needs at that resolution no problem at all. A GTX or 9800 is pointless overkill. Spend the money you save on a new CPU.
