Hey, just wondering what you guys would think would be a fair price to install Windows XP on someone's (a complete stranger) Mac? Apparently he has a legit disc and key.

If you dont know the guy id say around $100. It is pretty simple since the drivers come on the cd but best buy would charge him around $200.

The guy wants to pay $50. I've pretty much agreed to it, only because it's a MacBook Air and I've never worked with one before so I thought the experience might be helpful. I'm afraid though it might become a big mess if he doesn't really have a good install disc and key. I have Win 7 Pro and XP Pro discs, but apparently his is XP Home Premium, which I don't have.

It's a breeze to set up. Put in the XP/Win7 disk. Run boot camp. Put in Snow Leopard disk in for Window's drivers and youre pretty much done.

The directions that are provided by Bootcamp are pretty accurate. I printed them out when I did it and had no hiccups.

Yes, this should be true on a simple setup. But I have it on a dedicated hard drive on a Mac Pro with the main volume as a RAID spread over 3 disks and a bunch of other complications. :mamoru:

you're going to need a superdrive to do it on an air.

I have only used vm fusion but I want to instal Bootcamp instead because some things dont work in fusion that I need to.

Will installing Bootcamp wipe my HD clean?

Can I install windows 7 (or other version) using a pirated disc, it worked with fusion.

My understanding is that bootcamp basically shrinks your current Mac HD partition, then creates a new partition for Windows.

You can use Fusion to access/run the Bootcamp partition. But you can't take the Fusion vm you currently have and 'transfer' it to the Bootcamp partition (that i know of, someone will correct me if i'm wrong).

Well I downloaded a retail XP Home SP3 image, burned it, and installed fine on his computer with his key. So it was an easy $50 plus he bought me an iced tea.
