I plan on getting a Dell 8600 (don't even try to talk me out of it)

how much should I spend? it will be my ONLY computer

also how much would prices drop between now and the next 2 months?

That completely depends on how much money you have. It's like asking how much should I spend on my next car? :dunno:

I personally would never spend more than 1500 on a computer, but if it were a laptop that would be used as my primary PC I might spend 2K.

I'm in the same situation as you, at first I was planning on spending quite a bit on a nice notebook, but then I realized I didn't want to worry about something that expensive, so I went ahead and decided to get something cheaper, and then replace it in a year or two :)

the price on a 86 would drop but then the new models would be released and they will be the same price as the 86 today
then if you want to get a 86 youd have to get used or refurbished i think
and ive seen way too many refurbished laptops with problems

i got a 8100 in fall 2001, brand new, and it still runs ok today for school
for a while it was my primary computer when my old desktop took a dump

imo you should invest in the best laptop you can afford

price wise, i think toshiba would make a better laptop for all around computer use

Its impossible to guess what the price will be in two months, its even possible you will spend more money then. I would watch Dell and wait till the price looks good to you (currently the price is not that bad!!)

i just wanted to add that over the years ive dropped my inspiron twice, my bag strap snapped and the bag - with very poor padding - with the laptop dropped to the tiled floor on its edge, and another time i left it on a restroom counter about 4.5 feet above tiled floor and it teetered over and fell and it still runs
there are some loose parts but everything works the way it should
