I absolutely cannot stand the low light performance of the D80. How much of a step up would a D300 be?

I really think you need faster lenses like 1.8

I have all f/2.8 zooms. Still too slow sometimes for indoors and I have to use ISO 800, which looks like garbage.

    Both shot w/ the same 50mm f/1.4 lens @ 3200 ISO **D80 on HI.1 which is the same equivalent***, 1/125 shutter, f/2.8, WB @ 2500

I was going to do a similar thing to view the difference b/w my D300 and D50.

Cept my D50 only shoots at 1600 :wtc:

shoot with a d70 or a fuji s2pro if you think the d80's noise looks like crap.

The D80's noise isn't crap... The D300's is just better...

and to be completely honest, the difference you see there would barely register any difference in print, no matter the size.

Even less so if you use a RIP program to print...

The D80 is a lot better than I expected. I've never taken it above 1600 ISO and I must say, its not too shabby.

    Yeah, I don't mind it...

I mean I see where it could be improved on, but it doesn't make me cry when I have to use it...

Any chance you can do a 1600 comparison? A ton of detail is lost in both of those when it tries to do "noise reduction".

I've currently been looking at getting a D80 to start getting into photography. I'm assuming i'd be making the right choice with this camera? Or is a Canon or a Sony going to be a better choice?

I liked the way that the Nikon felt in my hand.. very comfy. Haven't tried the sony yet.

Yeah, it's a good choice. Canon also has a very capable lineup. Avoid the Sony.

Yeah i've never really been a fan of Sony.

After looking at the Canon 40D and how the body itself is the same price at the Nikon D80.. I think i might be getting the Canon. Apparently the 40D shits all over the D80

I think it was the OTAP forum where all the strokers keep going on about Canon.

I was originally considering a Pentax K200d, along with Sony, the Nikon D80 and now the Canon 40D.

I wasn't set out to blow my load all over the Canon without checking out all the others for fucks sake :o
