Forums are a bit more complicated when it comes to making money... too many pageviews and no clicking because people get used to the ads very quickly and ignore them. I have an automotive forum too (8000 uniques a day) but in spanish (which means less money for every click) and get an average of 200 clicks a day with adsense ... 200 CLICKS out of 100,000+ pageviews a day! At the end of the month I make around $500 :wtc: I hate my users

I've tried moving my ads all over the place with no results. The only thing that helped was adding a hottie besides the ads :mamoru:

Of course... after a couple of weeks the amount of clicks starts to go down... I need a new hottie

$500 is more than most people. Why don't you try offering paid sponsorships?

I've tried and I've had a couple of sponsors in the past years but they want everything for free... I guess people in my country are too cheap :mamoru: I've even offered 3 months of sponsorship for less than $100 and they still don't like the price or they ask for a free month to try out the service :ugh: I think sponsors are obsessed with soccer  They get all the sponsors :wtc:

Memberships to private forums worked a bit better than trying to find sponsors. At least in my case. Also paying a fee to sell their stuff since the buy/sell forums are very active...

Sounds to me like you need a soccer forum.

Depends on placement. Make sure, if using adsense, you allow for image ads so you get eCPM as well. :o

You need to convert your user base. Offer them deals, find auto suppliers and aftermarket suppliers who will work on a commission-based contract with you. You might only get 3-10% per sale, but it adds up if you give your users what they need to work on their cars. That's why CarDomain is as successful as they are. They can fund their really crappy site and sponsor all sorts of events because they give their users and outlet to purchase the pieces they need. I used to own a car site (The Car Showcase; biggest flop ever due to hiring crappy coder) but we managed to snag a few deals with suppliers and were creating content right out of the box with them.

The site is long gone, but I left thinking highly of the auto industry. You're lucky people in your industry typically have some disposable income; so find something they'll want and offer it to them, using whatever means you need to. Just do it as tastefully as possible and let them know you're busting your balls to make their lives easier.

yes and no, it really depends on his user base, if it is a local site(michigan) then the disposable income is not there like it has been in the past, if it is a forum that has a larger user base(America) then he will be better off

I thought that coder was supposed to be a badass. I remember either you are Carlos bragging to me about his kung-fu.

It wasn't me, haha. We got with another coder towards the end and decided he would help better with our other projects. If that's who he was showing off. :dunno:

People aren't into modding cars as much as they used to be. It takes a lot more effort to make $ in this business imo

I'd definitely believe that. I reckon there's most money in events, be it hosting one or selling at them.
