I mostly take close-in shots. So the 12x zoom of the S3 isn't really an issue.

Generally speaking, will I notice any difference in quality between the S3 and the A710 in close-in shots?

close-in? As in close up, or zoomed in

i have an s3 and have had it for a month, the super macro is ridiculous, you could literally hold the glass up against an object if you wanted to and it would focus. in fact, i'm selling my s3 in the yard sale :o just picked up a d50

Oh geez, I forgot about this thread.

Yeah, I meant as in close up. Like within 10 inches or so.

My pos vivitar is one step from being on the bad end of my hammer.
I simply can not take a pic closer than a few feet with it without getting flash washout.
I've tried everything. Putting masking tape over the flash, in various layers.
It's time for a decent upgrade.

I like that the S3 holds 4 batteries. I've been seeing user reviews of people
saying the A710 doesn't recharge the flash fast enough, and the batteries wear out
    too fast.
