How much better is XP Pro as opposed to Regular XP?

Discussion in 'OT Technology' started by Capt. Fantastic, Feb 25, 2005.

  1. Thinking about upgrading. Someone posted a thread about xp tweaks and it appears in xp pro it is far easier.

    Thoughts?

    Not true. Its the same OS. The only difference is in the a few of the features like multiprocessor capability, AD integration, and remote desktop.

    Personally I would ditch both and put on Windows 2000 Pro.

    It's much faster, and miles more stable.

    2000 is like 98 and a bit.

    XP is a fat bitch however. Ful of shit that you don't need.

    If you know what you are doing however, I would get XP Pro and trrim out the guts that you don't need. My PC runs fine for days on end - sometimes idle downloads, sometimes games, internet, and lots of programming.

    2000 is nothing like 98. Totally different lineage.

    2000 = WinNT5.0
    XP = WinNT5.1

    XP is basically 2000 plus some eye candy (most of which I turn off) and a few newer features, like autorun with some wizards for automating some tasks on memory cards, updated drivers built in for stuff than didn't exist when 2000 was born, and useful features like remote desktop server/remote assistance. I've had NT4.0, 2000, and XP machines and experienced similar levels of excellent stability with all of them. Current uptime on this XP Pro machine is just over 25 days. I only reboot when maintenance or software installs make me. I've had no need to "trim the fat out of this fat bitch." It runs fine.

    Only thing in Pro that I would use :

    Remote Desktop – remotely access your Windows XP Professional PC, from another Windows PC, so you can work with all of your data and applications while away from your office.

    In my opinion the remote desktop feature is well worth it.

    The built in IIS comes in handy too when you need to send someone a big file directly off your computer. Home doesn't have that.
