I have been doing 12 , 10 , 8 for most of my exercises at the gym... but i don't know if its actaully doing anything..

should i up the amount of sets i do, or just increase the reps?

I change it up anywhere from a max of 11 to as few as 3 reps per set depending on day. I also change routines when I feel I have plateau'ed.

Currently 4 sets of 8-12... but 5x5 worked fairly well too. (BB not PL)

I never do more than 12 sets for one mucle group. That's the furthest I will go. Beyond that I know I will overdo it and feel like shit or train the muscle beyond all recovery before the next workout. But I always have adequate variation in my 10 to 12 sets.
