When you guys check out your Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and click the Processes, how many processes do you have running??

My new Dell 9200 has 55 running, that seems kinda high???

alt-print screen captures the active window, ctrl-print screen captures the entire screen

i usually have about 17 running before applications. my work pc has 35 running right now, but that includes a whole lot of things i would never run at home.

How do you know what you need and don't need? A lot of the things in my task manager I do not know what they stand for?

Best thing to do is look online for a "database" that explains a lot of common
    processes...like this one:

    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

    :ugh2:

Take a look at the picture I posted of my Task List, you see my username (abb3y) and you see that process explorer.exe, that is my windows desktop...it is vital to the OS.

Please refrain from giving incorrect advice to people that don't know a lot about computers, because they will listen.

I got my dads computer to run around 16 typically (xp pro sp1). It's a slow comp, had to kill some stuff.

my xp pro sp2 never goes over 24 (w/ web browsing, trillian, and winamp running). Usually only have about 19 on a fresh restart.

    you just suck :p

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic...because if you are I can post a picture of my service configuration also, trust me with a little know-how it isn't that difficult.

BTW you sound real technical saying things like "system stuff".

    :ugh:

    Finally...someone with a brain.

yea, I had it down to around 16 when I was using my car-puter. It wouldn't even run explorer.exe... I had my interface set as the shell. When you get rid of networking and all of those services you can really cut it down! My fully-operational system used 48MB of ram when all was running :)

Nice, when my computer boots and is up it uses about 65MB of RAM, that picture was after some coding, downloading and surfing.
