what motor/tranny asshat?
Google is tuff!
Ahh 396 V8
A 396 was touted to put 325 HP out.. Probably a bit lower than that
72 Chevelle is my dream muscle car
Yea I figured This guy is telling me his stock 396 puts out 450+ HP to the wheels.
71 is when they started getting loaded down with emissions shit. In a few short years, 454s would come with 165ish HP to the wheels
He's full of shit.
Long story.. just the muscle car I have always wanted
the 396 in the '72 chevelle was rated at 375 hp.
figuring a 20% drivetrain loss, it would have about 300hp to the wheels. Or course that is only figuring what GM rated the motor at
Mine wouldnt be stock and its a muscle car I have always wanted that would be actually obtainable in my lifetime. I have a bunch of Chevelle models someday I can get the real thing
well heasked, so i gave him a straight up answer.
it made a lot less than that, ill tell you that much.
I'd guess around 200ish at the wheels.
Kenny, what books say, and what is "claimed" is quite different in 72, GM severely underrated the output in 71 and 72 to counteract insurance companies rates on high horsepower motors... Your average horsepower on a stock 396 is approximately 350-350hp depending on options... it's kinda like ford rebadging the mustang as LX yet still have a 5.0 in it... Just a ploy...
A chevelle curb weight comes in at 3840 lbs Moving one of these babys into the 10 second range takes some skill
Or just a Big Block...
It's not that easy
At the drag strip I see lots of big block Chevelles in the 10's and 11's
with lots of work done.
502 or 572 with suspension for traction.. you are talking about 600-700+HP shouldnt be hard to get into the 10-11's
