I've been talking to a few people, and a lot of them have been shocked that I'm using manual focus. They said that everyone uses auto focus unless doing macro photography. Is this true?

when it comes to focus, your camera is a lot smarter than you OR your eye. :o

why in the world did you use it? does your camera not auto focus or something?

all the pro's rely on autofocus unless there's a reason their camera can't do it right (ie- it's raining/snowing on the soccer field)

it has auto focus, but i thought manual focus was the more advanced way that people took pictures. I thought one of the main features of a DSLR (other than interchangeable lenses) was the ability to do manual focus

Wide shots, night time, and close ups especially when I want to definitely get like the "lizards eye" in focus.

aka, a stubborn situation where it keeps auto focusing on something it shouldn't.

when most people say they "shoot in manual", they mean manual mode (you manually adjust shutter speed, aperture, etc), not necessarily manual focus. :0

well that I know. I've been shooting in manual mode and I love it. But when they say that they use MF, then I know that they mean manual focus

id say 85% of the time manual. because my camera hates when the object is less than 2 feet away.

I use manual every now and then. Sometimes the camera gets confused and you have to do it manually, particularly when dealing with low light, or low contrast.

I have a friend who used to manual focus all the time. He believed that, that's how pros did it. About 3/4 of his pictures were OOF. He went AF after about 8 months of this.
