i'm creating a new site that's pretty simple.. mostly dealing with images / user registration.

i was thinking of learning a framework like zend, symfony, kohana... since they take care of things like db abstraction, templating, MVC design, built-in helpers, flexible URL routing, etc... but not sure if it's a little overkill for simple sites.

do any of you use a framework, or do you still do everything on your own?

I'd actually like to find out about this, too. I've been writing everything on my own.

Design patterns carry on over to PHP as well. Been thinking on picking up on ROR a lot myself lately.
