    How Low Will They Go?

    Wow.

Last week, I pointed out that there are a lot of brand new trucks sitting on U.S. dealer's lots gathering dust. I illustrated the fact with an ad from a Dodge dealer selling Ram Quad Cabs for 50 percent off manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP).

As bad off as Dodge is with their 160-day supply of Dodge Ram full-size pickup trucks, they didn't hold a candle to Nissan's 489-day supply of Titans. An email from Cleek tells us that a Nissan dealer in Rock Hills, SC took matters into his own hands this past weekend. He's advertised 45 percent off MSRP sale of pickups, vans and SUVs.

It looks like massively discounted truck clearance sales may be the wave of the immediate future. So far, the biggest discount we've see is 50 percent. How low do you think they'll have to go to clear inventory as the model year winds down and inventory piles up? How long before we see brand new pickups for under $10k? (God help light truck residuals.) Have you seen any dealers in your area offering huge discounts like these on trucks, vans and/or SUVs?

At some point, it actually becomes worth the price. Even at $5/gal, it's not going to cost you $10,000 in gas a year, so if you can save that much...

I remeber someone did the math and even if the truck got 16mpg and you drove 15K miles or something it was still cheaper to buy/finance the truck than try and get an economy car

If you buy it plan on keeping it. The resale for new trucks is as horrible as the demand for them.

i dont keep cars for only a year. if you can save 1/2 the fuel, you're looking at 4000 gallons of fuel...~120k mile payoff. most people keep their cars for that long, or at least i do.

Like I said in the other thread, if 4 door Wranglers ever get to 50% off, I'm pulling the trigger.

And yeah, there will be a point where the savings will offset the fuel costs. But as long as uninformed consumer sentiment continues to demand smaller cars, manufacturers will continue to hurt.

Driving 15,000 miles a year, at 15MPG, at $5/gal would cost you basiclly $5,000 ($4,995). That's shooting high too, we're still not quite at $5/gal.

I would've bought the xterra if they offered that deal here.

Even if it's the lowest base model that they're probably offering there.
