Could have been a tad brighter. 1/20 shutter speed. I tried 1/30 and it didn't seem to give enough motion.

Probably would be fine if it was not from 100 yards away.

Could even bump your shutter speed up a bit.
When I shoot at the track, most stuff is 1/80th - 1/250th

thanks. yeah it was an after-thought. dragon129 and i were on the back of the lincoln memorial and at the same time we're like "let's try panning!"

the d90 with VR lenses makes it pretty easy. i have a few other cars that came out almost decently

really? these cars were moving like 30-40mph and 1/30th didn't seem to give the landscape enough motion

Yeah the distance killed me on my 200mm focal length zoom with no IS or tripod. Fucking need a permit to put a tripod up on the Lincoln memorial. I really need to get a telephoto with IS. 70-200 F4L is nice but shit I can't hold that fucker steady :o

if the permit is free i say we get it. really wish we had a chance to get that shot over the reflecting pool

or just plan your shot in advance, fire from manual mode, setup your camera in advance, already mounted on the tripod... walk along, drop your tripod, snap the pic, and keep walking. :dunno:

course if the guards told you where/how to get a permit, and it's free, it might be better doing that than running the risk of going to jail. :hsugh:

That's a hell of a lot sharper than i would have expected out of 1/20th, but it's still a little soft. bump the shutter speed to 1/50th - 1/60th to get a real sharp image. yeah, it'll lock the fore/background up so you'll lose some of the illusion of speed, but your subject will be sharper. You can also move closer to your subject. you'll be panning faster, but you'll capture your subject better, and still have the illusion that the car is screaming by on a track.

Gotcha. Had no idea where the shot was. SS will all depend on how fast the vehicles are moving... gotta figure on the track, it's 80mph and waaaaay beyond so you're naturally panning faster.

Not bad. Keep it up. Panning takes a lot of work and practice to nail down. I have a LOT of fuck ups.
Ive been really practicing as much as I can.

Some recents without, with and without the 1.4x II extender.

This photo was taken with the 1.4xII on. Notice the horrible IQ in comparison

Doesnt look sharp to me. I'd like to see the full size original or a crop of the car to really evaluate the sharpness.

The slower the car is going the slower the shutter needs to be, but the harder it is to get a sharp subject.
