So the gym in my apt. complex got vandalized and has been closed for the last 4 months. So i decided to do only calethestics in the meantime (mainly push ups, crunches, and pull ups in my basement). Over the past 4 months, I've gotten in better shape just doing these exercises, where as before I would go to the gym and lift like crazy lifting and using all the high tec machines. Why is this?

When I went to the gym, I separated my workouts for the week into chest/biceps, back/triceps, shoulders/traps, and Legs (doing each one of these once a week). For the last 4 months I've done Push ups, crunches, and pull ups every other day each week. My diet has stayed the same for each.

    Still very vague.

And what's your definition of "better shape."

The fact you say "high tec machines" makes me doubt a lot of your statements...

Post both of the routines - the exercises.

    No.

But you should be more exact about your diet before and after as well as the type of work-out you were doing then and now. Just for the sake of finding out what the cause of your "better shape" might be. I doubt it's from the change in work-out alone...

Then- Chest/Biceps, next day legs, two days do back/triceps, two more days do shoulders/traps. Assorted exercises using both free weights and machines.

Now- Every other day I do about 4 sets of push ups, 4 sets of pull ups, and 4 sets of crunches (doing each set to failure)

When I say better shape I mean the over all look is better.

I've been using the "testosterone advantage plan" book from mens health. Was using it then and using it now. I guess my question is, can you get the same/similar results from just doing calethestics? (assuming you're not going for bulk)

i'm going to tell you the same thing i told my little brother. the soul purpose of a machine is to increase efficiency. walk into any gym and describe to me what kinda guys use machines. let me rephrase that, what kinda women use machines.

the exercises your doing are a great addition to a weight lifting routine, but for overall body development your gonna have to hit the weights.

Maybe your body got used to doing the same workout every week, and switching it up shocked your body into growing?

I use machines. the funciton trainer to be exact. Also, you could read a couple of logs here and see they're common among the some of the "bodybuilders" here.
