I am more than likely joining at the end of the year and I was just curious. My teeth have never really been straight. Are braces and other similar procedures treated just like the regular world or are they free/cheaper?

All medical care is free. Braces for aesthetics are a little harder to get. Priority goes to those that are adversely affected by the position of their teeth, however if the orthodontic clinic isn't too busy and has the resources available, they should be able to help you out. I got them for free, mostly for aesthetic purposes and they've been straight since I got them off.

really depends on where you are stationed

When we were in Newfoundland Canada the dentist on base didn't do anything other than the basics. I needed a retainer as a kid and we had to go out on the town, and the closest one was in St. John's:o. But for basics such as cleanings, extractions, emergency work etc they did it all there.

I never needed anything more than the annual check ups/cleanings in Hawaii and I know they did those at Makalapa Clinic. Not sure they did much more than that, I never saw dependants in there:o.

In the 5 years I was in, I only had one cleaning. Now I go see the (civilian) dentist about 4 times a year because of those years of neglect.

Hi all, not only did I have braces put on by the base orthodontist but they sent me off base to a more qualified one to get me ready for jaw surgery. There is another ortho on base now. There is also a world class oral surgeon on base as well. I deployed with braces and it has never been an issue, the same goes for dozens of others that I know. 100% free as well.

A lot of installations are also offering laser eye surgery if your vision warrants it. Again, that depends on how bad your eyes are and what the demand for it is in the area.
