Found a body on craigslist today for 225 and was wondering if anybody here has used one? Checked ebay and some other online prices this morning and it seems to be a decent price for the body. Also how much should I expect to spend on an alright lens for a begginer, probably just need a kit lens to start out but I have no idea where I should look for good prices.

I still have one. It was a great camera in it's day. I still use it from time to time actually. Go for it!

the only down fall to the 10D is that it won't accept EF-S mount lenses... so if you want something like the 17-55IS, or the 10-22 you'll want to spend the extra little bit and jump to a 20D

But other than that it's a wonderful cam (not to great with High ISO though) it was my 1st DSLR.....

how much ya'll think I can low ball the guy? The camera has no memory, no glass and a guesstimation of 15k to 20k actuations? It just comes with the body, battery, charger, data cable and the old software...

I had one a few years ago as a backup. It's a great little camera, but +1 on the no EF-S thing. It's also not very good at higher ISO. Anything above 400 is pretty noisy. Your best best bet is just find a used 20D.

I recently got mine in very good shape with two authentic canon batteries, a bg-e2 grip and 28-80mm craptastic lens for $390 Canadian

assuming I can get about $190 for the bg-e2 and the 28-80 that would be about $200 for the 20D

I've seen 'em get about at low as 300 with no lens and 350 with kit lens.

So looking a couple cities over I found a d40 body for $280, seems to be the better deal so far. Any thoughts on the d40 over a 10d?

Well, you can still get a new D40 for not much more, whereas any 20D you find will be 3-5 years old, with a possibly worn out battery who knows how much wear and tear...

And, the 10D and 20D both look noisier at high ISO to me. :dunno: Keeping in mind the 20D is a design two years older than the D40 that was replaced almost a year before the D40 went on sale.

Granted a couple advantages to the Canons, they aren't in any way lens-crippled like the D40 and have a DOFP button that the Nikon lacks.

D40 = Nikon equivalent of a Rebel. New != good. The 40d is old, yeah, but it's still a rock solid body, with good construction, and better high ISO performance than most cameras at the same level or lower.

So those of you who think the canon is better, what are your reasons?

20D vs D40. Build quality for starters. the D40 is their bottom end DSLR. the 20D, while dated is still of better quality, and the lens selection from there is a pretty simple choice after that...

    Chuck Norris uses Canon.

Not the bodies, just the L glass--on a Polaroid body.

20D is not a bottom rung camera and does not have the same lens/focus motor issues as the D40. I still use my 20D almost daily and it does great after 4+ solid years of use and abuse. But in reality, they're both good cameras and you should just play with both to see which you like.

The Rebel has a smaller body made of plastic, and despite the similar resolution, the sensor is a different and later design than the 20D's. Both have DIGIC II and performance is pretty similar with maybe a slight edge to the 20D, but nothing you'd notice.

Is there anything to worry about with the plastic body? I found a full set up with bag, lens, flash, memory, tripod and other goodies that I might be able to get the guy down to $300 on... Sound like a good deal?
