How important are abdominal muscles?

I've been reading alot of Pilates and Yoga books lately and they all seem to say that a strong abdominal area is crucial.

Sometimes I feel like I could use alot of work in my abdominal area.

My questions: What defines a well toned abdominal area? How can a person tell if he/she needs to work on abdominal muscles? Are they genetic, or can anyone achieve maximum results?

Personally, I believe this to be the most important muscles in the body because they allow you to hold your body up straight and therefore you can also hold your spine straight. And the more muscle you have, the more strain you can put on your body while still maintaining a straight back.

Anyone have a link for really effective abdominal exercises?

The three most effective abdomenal exercise are bicycle crunches, captain's chair, and swiss ball crunches. You cannot use weights easily while doing bicycle crunches, however, so they are less effective if you already have well developed abs. I also like doing declined weighted crunches. Regular situps are not a very useful exercise because they do not exert enough of the muscles sufficiently.
You will not get a good six pack without low body fat, regardless of how strong your abs are though, if that is your objective.

Abs are not important at all. You should have them removed. Just connect your pecs to your thighs...it'll be all good.

Good article, I might try some of those.

This topic sure drifted away from topic fast. Almost as bad as the OT forum.

Thanks Ceaze and the other folks who contributed.
