How hard is it to convert a car from Manual transmission to Automatic transmission?

is it practically possible? or does it mean a complete rebuilding/modification of the engine?
let's say a sedan 4 cyl, year 2000 and up

the engine will usually be the same from a manual and an automatic. you'll need to replace the tranny, the pedals, the shifter, and all the other things related to shifting. It'll be so expensive you'd be better off trading in your car and buying the same exact car in automatic.

Sometimes you don't have to replace the pedals. But in that year, just trade.

Way too fucking much. You're much better off trading in your stick, tracking down a comparable car with an automatic gearbox, buying a plane ticket to get there, buying gas to drive it back, paying a good mechanic to fix whatever broken stuff the prior owner left to fester, and having it steam-cleaned. Seriously, it's not that much money to get minor stuff fixed, cleaned, and detailed, and it's guaranteed to work right -- there isn't a chance in hell a gearbox conversion is going to be warranted by the OEM.

I've seen it done on alot of Galants(which, doesnt have an exact manual counterpart, so it can't just be traded)

But I don't think there are too many cases like that around, so you probably could just trade it in for the exact same car with a stick.

Isn't the swap usually the other way around?

Well this actually depends completely on the car. If you were looking do it to something like an accord that's very popular, you could find everything in a junk yard and do it for a relatively cheap price. Labor is what's going to kill you on this install. You need everything dealing with the tranny including the ECU.

You can have my automatic... I fucking hate it. Manual is the way to go.

Hell yeah, nothing's better than having to shift 100 times every time you commute home at night.

Tiptronic is the new automatic. DSG with auto mode is the new stickshift. 4-on-the-floor is dead -- nobody will be buying sticks in 20 years, except die-hards, because the fuel economy barrier has finally been broken.

My dad did it before, but that was way back in 93. He did it to his '89 corolla, I don't know how long it took him though but he did a good job.

My auto is an autostick... and to be honest, I hate it. Maybe I wouldn't mind it so much if it was a 5-speed autostick, but its still just a 4-speed autostick. Pretty boring. And bad fuel mileage.

    DAWWWWWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTTT.

Trade for a 5-speed manual anyday, in stop and go traffic...I don't even care. Maybe if you live in a huge city it's a PITA, but out here getting stuck in a big traffic jam happens like 9-10 times a year maybe. Not that worried.

I get in an hour of traffic every day, and I don't mind it one bit. It's completely worth it. I will never drive an automatic...
