Is cardio a necessary evil if you really want to get cut? Or are eating right and lifting weights enough (generally)?

You cannot get shredded without cardio and a good diet, they are equally necessary and important. If you would like to try one without the other be my guest.

I'll second this, I've just spent 4 months trying to cut without cardio and it hasn't worked. Cardio speeds it up so much for me.

For years I used to stay lean without cardio.
So long as you're in a calorie deficit whether it be either through activity, a restricted diet or a combination of both.
Last year I used cardio just as a way to eat abit more. I aimed for a certain caloric deficit and whatever I burned from cardio I actually added to my intake.

    Totally agree with GT.

Most people can't be strict enough diet wise to achieve the look they are looking for through diet alone. Hence the need for cardio.

You have to be lean in the first place inorder to maintain it. Threadstarter is not going to get leaned out or drop fat at any rate if he isnt doing cardio.

I was relatively lean and then get leaner without doing cardio.
Until I had my first mp3 player, cardio was just too boring. And doing HIIT seemed catabolic when on a very restricted diet.

Many find cardio boring. Either's lack of discipline isn't the point.
I'm sure a large portion of the population still manage to lose weight by diet alone.

Down 15lb in 5 weeks with strictly weightlifting. The most cardio I do is walking to the car.

Dropping weight without cardio, yes thats possible. Getting "shredded" (muscle serrations, full set of abs, being real vascular) not without cardio.

I think like some people have said it's mainly a diet/caloric issue... you should do some form of cardio anyawys just to be healthy... It's good for you.

I hate cutting calories, I've decided to just throw in more cardio and up my volume while keeping cals the same - it's worked for me before.

    cals in vs. cals out

whether through nutrition or cardio, now as you get leaner its important to start cardio because of a host of reasons, better fat oxidiation and mobilization, you can eat more cals if your doing cardio, etc.....

just worked hard and kept a strict diet really...the muscle you can see in the 2nd pic was there in the first, just under a bunch of fat.

Same thing this year...but this time i bulked up to 200 in the winter and i'm 175 right now and around 8% bf. Although like i said before, this time around i did add in cardio, 5 days a week 30-45 minutes a day, low intensity (heart rate around 120-130).
